I watched him pitch in person many times when he was with the Dodgers and a couple of times when he was on the Yankees when they played at Angel stadium. One of the worst managerial calls in World Series history involved Tommy John. Game 6 with the Dodgers leading the Yankees 3 games to 2 - Bottom of the 4th in a 1-1 game. Tommy John is do up with two runners on and two outs. Bob Lemon, the manager of the Yankees, decides to pull Tommy John from the game and sends up Bobby Murcer to pinch hit. Tommy John was shown on TV to be very upset with the decision to pull him from the game which led to a Dodger blowout win.
Murcer lined out to deep right and the new Yankee pitcher George Frazier immediately gave up 3 runs and the game was over. Dodgers won 9-2 and won the World Series. Frazier lost three games in this World Series and to this day the decision by Lemon to pull John in a 1-1 game in the 4th inning still does not make sense.

Over the years , I've met him multiple times . He was one of the nicest ball player that I've ever met .

His numbers merit Hall Of Fame induction, and when you factor in his eponymous surgery he should absolutely be in there. Hopefully his omission corrected soon. RIP Tommy.
R.I.P. Tommy John. He was the first player that I completed a basic player set (raw) in the late 80s. I loved watching him get batters out with his 75 MPH fastball near the end of his career.

There really needs to be a committee that evaluates positions that can then elect multiple candidates with very similar careers without the normal BS.
Example 2nd base, in alphabetical order:
Bobby Grich
Willie Randolph
Lou Whitiker
The fact none are in the hall is a travesty, but they all should be! Each of them had near double Harold Baines' (yeah a low bar to be sure) ultra lengthy career WAR and unlike Baines actually played defense and did it very well.
As I said put those 3 in en-mass. No need to nitpick that one had more power but another had better defense or that one had more championships or that one has slight better OPS etc...
Then move on to 3rd base and so forth.
If it had been done for Pitching perhaps John is in. Dude and his family deserved it before he passed!

Richie Allen passed in 2020; finally got his recognition in 2025 by the Classic Baseball Era Committee.
Mr. Allen was rejected by a couple committees while he was with us.
Thankfully Tony Oliva was elected in 2022 while he is still with us.
I remember seeing a reaction video of Mr. Oliva; it was truly heart-warming.
Give these gentlemen their recognition while they are with us!!!

Glad Dave Parker got to at least see he was elected, had that occurred any year prior he woudl have made it to the ceremony.
I wonder how many on the Vets Committee are sociopaths? Meaning those who are without empathy that string out deserving players in the octogenarian range year after year so they and their families are deprived.

Funny you mentioned Grich, I was just thinking that he was probably very close to being hall of famer. Randolph, Lopes, Bill Russell, Dusty Baker, Dave Kingman, George Foster. Lots of candidates.
However I side more with the people who want limited HOFers. Billy W., Tony O., R Santo. All where fabulous players, but HOF players, i dunno know. WHen I think Hall, I am thinking about the greatest of the greatest. Like Fergie was fantastic but when he was pitching he wasn't considered to be a top 10 pitcher for any decade in particular. Jim Kaat same way.
BUt since the door has been opened to very good players instead of the greatest players then the argument really gets going on how many do you let in.
The cluelessness behind dismissing Ferguson Jenkins as anything other than a deserving entrant to the HOF has been noted.
Anyone's definition of greatest, fabulous, etc... are all just subjective. When you have more than 1 player in then there will always be someone less talented/deserving. That doesn't mean more guys don't deserve to be in.
