Two outstanding books with deep studies of classic U.S. gold coins. Both are full-size (quarto) volumes & both are in absolute mint condition.
The 1st is The Harry W. Bass, Jr. Museum Sylloge by Q. David Bowers. 488 pages plus index. Lavishly illustrated in color. An exhaustive study of the Bass collection. The book has research in great depth along with invaluable commentary on every coin. Chapters on U. S. patterns and the study of die states also..
Long out of print. There are two copies on eBay with photos. One is described as in "mint" condition with a price of $550 plus $20 shipping. The other is described as in "very good" condition with a price of $700 plus $31 shipping.

The 2nd book is The United States $3 Gold Pieces 1854 - 1889 by Q. David Bowers with Douglas Winters. 176 pages lavishly illustrated. Signed by Q. David Bowers, Douglas Winters, and Richard Jewell (specimens from his collection furnished most of the images of coins in the book). The book contains an extensive study of the historical background of the $3 coin and an individual analysis of each date/mint mark in the series. Just a superb book for any collector interested in the series.

I got a sneak peek at the Bass Collection before it opened up at the ANA museum way back when. I was there for a summer seminar and was lucky enough to befriend the step son who was overseeing it as well as Q. David Bowers son.
Only a few pieces were displayed at the time but they were amazing.
