Counterfeit 1980 Charlotte Os Ripken minor league card

the discussion about fake 86 fleer jordans made me think about this one. I saw a video on Youtube recently were a rare blue bordered 80 ripken minor league card that was being auctioned was deemed to be counterfeit. It was already holdered by PSA. PSA delisted the cert for the card and the auction house pulled it. I think it was around $18k when it was pulled.

Any Ripken collectors know any more backstory about this card/situation?

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Maybe the card in question could be posted here to get some opinions from the photo.

Other than the monthly pickups thread, pics in this forum is definitely lacking.

It was somewhat common to find fake minor league/college cards slabbed by PSA and other companies in early 2000's. There have been several articles posted about the million-dollar counterfeit ring. It was estimated to be the largest card counterfeit effort ever. I still think the minor league card market is held back because of the all the counterfeits. https://sportscollectorsdigest.com/auctions/taft-counterfeit-scam-might-have-reached-1-milli

Some of this minor league stuff stays in print much longer than the year of the card would indicate.

Sometimes you'll see cards, like the HOF exhibit cards, that are in print from 1947-1966. The hof exhibit stuff is well documented. Other cards have long print runs too but aren't so well documented. The small entities printing this stuff print it to sell at games and such to bring in dollars at the gift shop. When they run out they just reorder from the printing company.

Ripken was hot all through the 80s and early 90s. I wouldn't be surprised if that card had multiple printings. They seem too common to have just been printed in 1980 and sold at a minor league ball game.

Hello, all. My name is Chris. I am the guy mentioned in Mike’s video. One thing I have not checked up on is the timeline of the certification on this card. Under the guidance of Joe Orlando, PSA made extensive modifications to the blue and orange Ripken issues around 2007. Either way, this could’ve ended really bad for a collector. And to be honest, this auction probably gets a lot of credit for me making a return to RITM. That and of course an
$81,000 final price for a 1980 Police issue, but that’s another conversation for another day.

Hi Chris, thank you for chiming in! you are exactly the kind of collector this thread needed! many of us know of the blue and orange ripken cards, but we do not know the intricacies of them.
