MLB World Series upsets

Sad to hear about the passing of Bill Mazeroski…

And his legendary HR in game 7 of the 1960 World Series sort of got me thinking about the great upsets in World Series history. Seems the decade of the 1960’s has afew… so take a moment and list 3 to perhaps 5 of those WS matchups that were truly were upsets. I suspect 1960 and 1969 will make several lists but will either of those two be the most frequently mentioned?

2001 Diamondbacks over the Yankees and the 1997 Marlins over the Indians come to mind.

Indians starting pitching was kind of weak but their lineup was significantly better

1906 White Sox over the Cubs. The Cubs won 116 games, lost the Series 4-2. White Sox hit .198 in the Series and won anyway.

in 1990, the Oakland A's were a fantastic team with great hitting and pitching. I was positive that they were going to sweep the Reds. turns out, it was the Reds who did the sweeping.

If I am remembering correctly, the A's won 108 games that season. they should have been a wrecking ball.

1954 World Series has to be one of the biggest upsets in MLB history. Not just because the underdog Giants won, but because they swept against the Indians who had arguably one of the best pitching staffs in MLB history and had won 111 games in a 154 game season.

If nothing else is remembered from that series it should be the game one catch by Willie Mays.

This is what came to mind for me as well.

Cardinals, with Gibson, having won year before, were favorites in 68 over Tigers. Maybe not a big upset with Tigers winning as a dog, but being a lifelong Cardinal fan it upset me.😀

    Brock should've slid but I'm glad he didn't :)

The 1968 World Series was amazing- perhaps one of the best of my lifetime. While I recall the Cards being the favorite, the Tigers had excellent line up. It was the comeback of winning the last three games that seemed nothing short of a miracle at the time… Only to be surpassed the miracle that transpired the following year.

I was a teenager in 1968 and I remember all the grief my Dad took for betting on the Tigers. He had the last laugh!! 🤗

As a post script. Dad raised me to be a fan of Detroit and St. Louis. So always followed both teams. But I always gave an edge to the Cardinals.

In looking back at the 1954 World Series, there was that brief moment that seemed like an eternity as Willie Mays made “The Catch” in a defining and iconic play. Vic Wertz was a decent power hitter and Mays played him shallow because the Indians had runners on first and second. The Polo Grounds had a deep center field wall…. as did Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. So in most other Stadiums, Wertz likely would have had a three run HR. The Giants went on to win that game and the Series. I think 1954 was the first year Wertz played in Cleveland. My recollection is he was with the St. Louis Browns up through 1953.
