New Zealand One Florin - Kiwi

There are a few coins I haven't yet processed into my collection, and these are some quick snaps of raw, ungraded coins still in flips. This one was a bit costly when I picked it up during Covid - Want to venutre a grade? Everytime I send these NZ coins to be graded, they come back details...

I like New Zealand coinage….but admittedly I like pretty much everything.

NZ business strikes from 40s and 50s can be very tough to make or find high grades. 63s are in abundance but 65s and 66s can be tough, especially with the popular Kiwi and Māori designs.

Really tough to tell from pics…but I’m not seeing any luster on yours. That plus the blast white coloring leads me to guess UNC details. (Is that PVC on the obverse above the crown?)

Details are sharp so if it’s just a tough picture I could see it going 61 or maybe 63.

I think that is some kind of tarnish. It is also in the front of the coin. I should drop it in acetone for a few days and see how it works out. But if I send it in for grading, ANACS will conserve it anyway,

Maybe this coin was out in a cement mixer.

I had a source from a local coin show of a steady stream of these silver NZ coin, but most came back cleaned. I asked in other forums and they said that polishing coins was normal in NZ and they are grade and slab crazy.

@lordmarcovan that 1881 token is very cool. I really like that design as well as those surfaces.

@mrbrklyn I can’t speak intelligently on coin culture in NZ but when I spent 2 years in Central Europe (‘02 and ‘03) I was aghast at the way classic coins were treated. Originality was completely unappreciated by the handful of “coin guys” I got to know a little bit.

Different strokes……regardless those are come crisp details on that Florin.

Still, I would like to get it graded and not have to come back details or in a body bag :) That Florin wasn't particularly cheap. I got a new one that is slabbed at NYINC...for less money

In fact, I really didn't want to buy this coin, but I let someone talk me into it for $40.

Actually, going over things, I forgot I picked these up in Philedelphia... around 2007. So it seems I've been collection them for a while :)

The coin in the original post has been cleaned and will not straight grade. Don't waste money hoping it may sneak by ... it won't.

    All glory is fleeting.

The obverse of the coin has a very bland appearance and show some dark toning remaining in some recessed areas. The coin was probably heavily toned at one time and overdipped to remove the toning. The overdipping led to the bland appearance.

Buying a nice coin already slabbed for near the cost of you sending in a raw coin to get slabbed is a WIN with no risk.

That is a good point, but I wasn't intending to spend that money but I felt bad for the dealer. What I really was looking for was 6 Pence pieces.

Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl, but she doesn't have a lot to say
Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl, but she changes from day to day
I wanna tell her that I love her a lot, but I gotta get a belly full of wine

    The power of the Cross!!

The Cross in the obverse near Queen, along with the Motto, is unique to this series of NZ Florins... and separates it from any other commonwealth. I learned that tonight :)

This coin commemorated an event which never happened:

    image
New Zealand Crown 1949 - King George VI proposed royal visit
    Silver, 38.0 mm, 28.32 gm

The king got sick and the visit was cancelled.
