A coining press is a manually operated machine that mints coins from planchets. After centuries it was replaced by more modern machines.
Presses came in multiple shapes and with different accessories (to collect the coins, etc.) They were made of cast iron. The basic elements are:[1][2][3]

I've seen one at my local Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Pretty fun to watch.
You can buy a modern one. This is still an industry, evidently.

I couldn't know. It is interesting though that we might be getting close to the point when we could create duplicates that are not discernible from the originals... and not just coins. This is true of all kinds of collectables.
