    If this was Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle, then people wouldn't think you were nuts. Hey it's your hobby, so do as you please. Are you going to get another set started with umm say Eric Davis or Jose Rijo?
    Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

    I always knew that onefasttalon was a Sabo collector but Ive never seen this thread. Im glad it came back up. And I thought my Jose Canseco collection was insane. I mean, it is insane but this is just crazy insane. Very awesome pictures. Loved looking at them.

    I can totally relate !! About 14 years ago, I tried to collect every Jerry Rice card that was available. I gave up once he went to the Raiders. Still own most of the cards. Some are really tough pulls...should really unload some on eBay.

    Wow! I just read this thread for the first time. That's AWESOME! I seem to remember another thread of someone meeting Sabo at the Reds museum...may have my details and player wrong. Was that you? Did you finally get to meet him in person and, if so, did you mention the collection to him? If there hasn't been an article on this yet there needs to be. I agree with others and say this is why we all collect personified.

    Here is my small contribution to this thread. This is an original line up sheet, used by Oriole's P.A. announcer (& fromer Brooklyn Dodgers hurler), Rex Barney from a game back in April of 1994 (Sabo's only year in Baltimore). As seen, Sabo batted 7th in the lineup that game:

    Cnote.... I still say the '93 Upper Deck is one of my favorite cards, picture wise. UD really hit a HR that year with their photography throughout that set. My fondness for that card is why I chose it when submitted to JSA/BGS.

    The BGS 8.5 Aqueous Test card is in my favorite list, the '05 Relic Card is deff up there... the'88 Pacillo Test is up there... my PSA 10 '93 Finest Refractors and '91 Desert Shields too... and my in-person auto's from the Moeller show are all up there for me.

    I have a feeling at least one of the 2 Aqueous tests headed to PSA will be in my list soon too image

    Hey Russ,

    I don't understand, but hats off to you. That is some serious dedication.

    I'm trying to think of other collectors that hoard individual cards for reasons other than speculation. In my hockey world there is a guy who collects one card, a 1972 OPC Don Lever. The card, which is a rookie of a marginal player, routinely sells for $75-100 or more raw. Without that guy in the market the card would be $1.

    Do you think there is an endpoint? At some point will you sit back and admire your work, or is it a never ending quest?

No, I can't imagine a day when I stop taking/picking up Sabo cards to salt away in my collection. It's getting harder and harder to find them anymore. Honestly, commons boxes are changing and kinda going away. 10 years ago, everyone had monster boxes of commons from mid-to-late 80's and early 90's stuff to sell/move... not so much anymore. Most of those have found their way into the trash or incinerators. Today's commons do not contain the occasional Sabo card. The BEST part of collecting his stuff... it's CHEAP (for the most part.) Will I ever admire my work? Are you kidding me?... I do that every day! image

    My dad gave me an 89 UD sabo for Xmas one year in a stack of singles he picked up for me at an LCS. I still have it in the original holder with sticker price of $1.75 - it's my only Sabo and I love it. This thread makes me love it that much more.

I’ve added plenty of Sabo content to my collection in recent years, and likely overdue for an update. It’s been so long since this thread was touched, it surprised me to see it return outta nowhere.
