VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA • CANADA • Reverse: ONE CENT 1859

Good evening. I’ve come across another inherited coin. This looks to be a highly collected coin type with a large number of specific types. Unfortunately, I assume the severed section will greatly influence any value. Looking for help on range of value and info. Thank you in advance!

Cheers - Keith Bernier

I've been a Vicky variety collector for over 30 years and have never seen a well-worn major "clip", if that is actually what it is. There are over 200 varieties of the 1859 with marriages. Yours looks to have some doubling at the tip of the knob and upper left of the body, but hard to tell from the pics, because you have to look at the stems and the die cracks to really narrow it down. Again, I've never seen a worn clip like that and, at one time, I had over 1000 1859's and probably looked at another 10,000 or so at coin shows, let alone those on the internet. If you really want to know what variety (some rare) that you have go here: https://www.vickycents.com/

  • Thank you for all your input. I’m not sure if what I referred to as a “clip” is damage from the past somehow or exactly what it is. I did some research last night and did see the devil is in the details as there are so many varieties. I’m going to work on creating more clear photos of the coin today.

Thank you again for all the information you offered with all your years of expertise, I appreciate you !

I, like @syl, have been collecting Vicky large cent varieties for over 30 years. There are currently 255 die pairs known for the 1859. The Vicky site referenced above is great for identifying the marriage.

I think your coin has been shaved at the edge after issue, i.e. post mint damage. Your photos have an oily look. I recommend that you dip the coin in acetone and re-photo it. That said, I do not see any repunched letters or numerals nor any significant die cracks to positively identify which die pair it is. Your coin would grade VG damaged, valued at less than $2 USD.

  • Dipping a collectors coin in acetone to clean it is a standard practice without risks?

Dipping in acetone is not considered cleaning and will not hurt the surface.
I usually leave mine for about 24 hours and then rinse with distilled water.
Also as mentioned, that is not a clip, it is damage, possibly intentional.
