Question about Master Dies used for the 1982 copper small date LMC
Hi everyone! Recently I came across a different looking 1982 copper LMC that seemed a bit different from what I'm used to seeing. In my pictures it's the brown looking 82. At first glance it looks like a small date 1982. However, the 9 and the 82 seemed different and smaller then what I'm used to seeing. The 9 doesn't appear as wide and seems like a different 9 compared to the other coin? Also, some of the devices seem smaller when compared to another small date copper 1982. Liberty is positioned slightly closer to Lincoln on the brown coin and further away on the other coin. The designer initials are slightly different on each coin.
The pictures compare 2, 1982 copper LMC's. I read an article on Coin Community Forum regarding Master Die's and changes that have been made to different coins. The author mentions the 1982 small and large date cents and discusses changes to the device sizes, shapes and positions. The coin I'm curious about doesn't match up with my comparison coin. Are there multiple Master Die's for the small date 1982 copper cent?
Thanks for taking a look!
The brown date on the right is the coin I'm curious about. The 9 seems like a smaller, different 9 and the date seems smaller in size. The date on the left is what I typically see.

The top liberty seems closer to Lincoln then the other coin. The "TY" seems different on each coin.

Hey IkesT thanks for taking a look! Just a couple questions. If they are from the same Master Die should liberty be in the same position for each coin? Also, could the designer initials change a bit on each die? I would think they would be consistent throughout the working dies?
Each image is from the same magnification and TY seems closer to the bust then the other coin. Even the Y seems shaped different on each coin? The designer initials on the bust seem wider apart on the brown coin then the other coin.
Thanks for looking! Still learning about how dies are made. Sometime when I'm looking at coins it seems like multiple hubs are used when creating a die? When I look at this coin it seems like the bust and TY, maybe even the 19 on the date were on one hub and the rest of the design on another hub? I could be completely wrong about this, its just a hunch I had? Thanks again!
Die wear and polishing can change features slightly. I expect almost every coin you look at will have some differences.
Take a look back through your previous posts, then come back and tell us what you have been doing wrong (hint: what do most of your posts have in common?).
We already know the answer, but it will be helpful to you so that you can stop going down the wrong path.
Thanks for taking a look. The brown 82 is definitely a rough looking coin. I'm still learning about die wear and the different die stages. Yeah IkesT you know I do like checking out coins for different design varieties! Maybe one day I'll find something interesting!
I did noticed I forgot to add the picture showing these coins side by side. The 2 coins seemed different, and that's when i started looking into how Master die's and working die's are created. Thanks again!

There are many variables of a strike that could control the entire image's look.

Save those 1982 small dates for a set. Research worthy.
Below photo is one of the above.
