MALTA (Order of) | 30 Tari of 1757 - NGC MS 62 (Top Pop) | Grand Master Pinto | Valletta Mint | Lustrous with Sharp, Centered Strike | Highest Graded for the Type!

Hi! Today, I wanted to share my latest acquisition for my personal collection of Maltese crowns. This piece is the usual and iconic 30 Tari minted in 1757 at the Valletta Mint during the reign of the 68th Grandmaster, the Portuguese Emmanuel Pinto (1741-73).

This piece is an earlier type of the 30 Tari where it does NOT, obviously, feature the portrait of a Grandmaster, such as those found during the reigns of de Rohan and Hompesch. Instead, this 30 Tari features the fascinating design of John the Baptist standing and holding a banner on his right hand and a lamb resting by his left foot. This PINTO type was minted in 1756-59, 1761, and 1768.

This 1757 is, bluntly speaking, the most common type with 46 varieties according to Gatt and the most seen in abundance. The obverse, which is the shield side, has a legend that translates to ”Brother Emmanuel Pinto Grandmaster Hospital Holy Sepulchre 1757“ and the reverse has ”None greater has arisen.”

This piece has been graded by NGC as a MS 62 and is Top Pop for this year, across both NGC and PCGS, and the highest graded, in MINT STATE, across NGC and PCGS for the general type—that is, the Pinto Type with John the Baptist and the Lamb. This piece is nicely toned with original surfaces and not the usual ”hairliney“ pieces seen with these near-Choice UNC pieces. The toning is the usual greenish tints and in this case, some cabinet patina for this upper grade piece. I just did not see a piece, in MS, for these earlier Maltese crowns and hence, had to get one in my collection with a price I was okay with. To be frank, I was quite certain that these MS straight grade 30 Taris would be found in the later issues of de Rohan or Hompesch.

The 30 Tari features a well centered strike with underlying luster and nearly full denticles. There is no cracked flan or adjustment marks. The strike quality is one of the best I have seen, with no weakness whatsoever. We see a die crack near “NON.”

Nice looking coin. I enjoy that “eggshell” look on what appears to be original skin. Congrats on your new addition to your collection!

Thanks so much MEJ! I can sense what you mean! I loved the originality and what I believe is a hallmark for Maltese Crowns of the KOM ... the greenish look? Some mossy color I feel? Haha!
