Which sports card dealers do you avoid (why)?

RaptormaniacsRaptormaniacs Posts: 136 ✭✭✭

I’m a creature of habit and typically buy from ANY dealer that gives me a cheaper product. After reading a few posts from both newer (older) threads, I’m starting to wonder why some dealers are much cheaper than others. I get most of my cards from U.S dealers and avoid the Canadian ones. Which dealers do you avoid and why?

PROBSTEEN , PWCC regardless of who may now own them.

Thanks. I’ve done a few purchases from Probstein. The cards looked legit and I got them all. The auction seemed on the “up and up”. What am I missing?

    Pwcc, haven’t done anything.

4SC, Greg morris and sports cards 4 ever are my other main ones.

Novella is the only one I won’t do again.

Keep using Probstein you'll find out.

Seriously if you looking around this forum info will be easy to find.

Also read the ebay neg and neutral feedback the stories are true.

Lastly never purchase more than one card in an order!

After reading up on them if you still decide to give them your money then when you are swindled you have no one to blame but yourself

What up with Novella? Never heard a discouraging word about him.

Goldin. Besides the shady history, he put bootleg merchandise in his first auction and refused to pull it when informed of its bootleg nature.

I totally get what you’re saying. I’m playing with matches.

I have my own little system of figuring out who is ‘on the up and up’. He failed miserably.

Using Probstein for consignment can end up in a nightmare. So many very bad stories. A few I know of personally. He and 4SC often get ebay negatives removed. Poof it gone. So, don't go by feedback.
Since Sports-Cards-Forever asks 5x to 10X card value I have never bought a single thing. I am amazed they sell anything, but they do. Dean's cards similar.

Never one problem with Steve Novella.

I’ve purchased well over 400 graded cards from 4SC (website and eBay). Always enjoyed dealing with them. They do get some favourable PSA results but I’m diligent before I buy.

Probstein. I’ve done about 15 transactions. Well over 100 graded cards. Again, I examine what I’m buying and received every card. I will be cautious on future transactions (if any).

I understand that stuff happens with shipments. I’ve only had a couple of bad transactions. They were both from Canada. Not big dealers and ungraded cards.

Deans and the Canadian dealers bite. I won’t/don’t give them the time of day.

I have never, and most likely will never, purchase a card from him.

Got one for you COMC. They make Deans look like a bargain.

That's surprising. I've never heard anything bad about him until your post. He's not super active these days but still takes in consignments from time-to-time.

Can you please share what you're talking about? I have purchased a couple of cards from him before.

Try, as you might, to figure out the meaning of 'up and up'. It shouldn't be difficult. And it wouldn't come in the form of an accusation. It's just part of the inherent belief that some dealers get a little extra help.

I still have no idea what your talking about so please just say what it is. I will probably purchase more items from this seller and if there's a chance that I or another poster will get burned, it would be nice to know.

Red Panda sports cards are pretty pricey.

I’m going to tell you to be careful when bidding on cards. It might cost you some extra money.

  • Yankees70Yankees70 Posts: 870 ✭✭✭✭

Are you suggesting there's bogus bidders?

I've known Steve Novella for 30 years.

He worked for Greg Manning for years and independently. He handled the sale of one of the biggest collectors I've ever known - Jim Crandall aka Davalillo who amassed over 100 vintage sets PSA 8 or better.

I would be interested what the beef is?

Is that the same Greg manning that was sued for being part of a group that was bidding up stamps (or coins)?

I'm not the only one who has no idea what you're taking about so is the face palm for everyone or just me? Big surprise you are back to your normal self.

Agree. Its not normal for a strong confident dude to be thread stalking another poster for months.

My harassment? Ok Alice. I suggest you read the two threads again and see who started this. God do you remind me of a chick I broke up with 40 years ago.

Does Levi list on eBay? If so he would win the prize for pricing at absurd levels especially since most of his stuff is below average on an eye appeal scale.

Another thing that drives me crazy are people who post on Facebook card sites and jam up the entire page with posts selling cards. I can see 1-2 cards every week or so, but I have seen one guy who constantly posts the same stuff, uses the same wording, and he posts several cards daily - probably accounts for 90% of the posts on the high end page and all of his cards are like they are from the land of misfit toys. Cards with MK designations, Aaron rookies in low grades with poor centering, and almost all of his cards are poor eye appeal.

Not sure about 707 on ebay. I remember looking at their print adds in the hobby monthlys and on their website and just shaking my head. stupid high prices and normally some very off centered cards.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

    Deans Cards and 707.

I've seen complaints about their pricing on every forum and social media site I've been on; but both employ multiple people and have each been in business for decades.
Someone is buying from them so I doubt they care about the negativity.
