Is Anybody Raiding the Family Silver Chest?

DisneyFanDisneyFan Posts: 2,599 ✭✭✭✭✭

Back in the day every bride had sterling silver mentioned in their wedding registry. The very wealthy even mentioned coffee and tea sets. It appears sterling has been replaced by stainless steel. Is there any sterling left to be melted?

When I was in line Friday at PAN to sell some Pt Maples there were multiple ladies in line with a handful of 14-18k rings and chains. They were all selling but didn't pay any attention to what they were being offered. Didn't see anyone with Grandmas gutterware but did see a few 90% junk guys getting turned away with no sale. RGDS!

This is another fake story from someone who isn't a genuine seller or hobbyist.

Yes! :D We have had so much silver come through the shop. It’s almost ridiculous, until recently we were probably sending it to the refiner about once a week! There is a ton of that stuff still out there believe it or not.

I did take the opportunity to buy some cool silver for myself near spot.

    Is that a 5 ozer?

A few people looking for gold and similar asking for platinum.

I seldom see much platinum at coin shows, nor do I ever hear about people asking for it. However, the worm has turned. Platinum is also in backwardation and it's an even smaller market than silver.

I have a fair amount of platinum 2nds, 3rds and 4ths that I was thinking about selling at some point, but knowing what I know now I am going to hold out for significantly higher prices.

    Think "rhodium".

I wonder if anyone still produces rhodium bullion bars? And how many still exist?

because of the spread, huge price swings and i'll guess it's difficult to hedge the ask prices are ridiculous over rhodium spot

One of the dealers I talked to on Friday when trying to sell my Pt CML's said "Nah, I'd probably mix it up and accidentally sell it as an ounce of gutter". LOL valid point. RGDS!

That's another argument for buying a PLTT ETF.

Yes it is. Actually bought 2 of them. Both are the patriots.

Yes, someone here got me into the PPLT about this time last year. It was a very good move. RGDS!

I bought a set of incomplete sterling flatware from our PM BST a few years ago when silver was closer to $20. I added some pieces to it, completed it and replaced my in-use stainless flatware set. One of the better purchases I've made. It has been in continuous use and I've more than doubled my investment.

References: Too many to list. PM for details. 100% satisfaction both as buyer and seller. As a seller, I ship promptly and keep buyers updated.

My gut feeling is to use the PPLT ETF for trading and keep the proof platinum Eagles as a long term holding.
