Anyone else that used to get the Australian "Year of the xxxxx" (Chinese zodiac)?

Back just after turn of century, bought mine, my son's, and my wife's...and an extra "year of the dragon".
Some had a premium (Dragon, Snake especially).
Never thought of selling them, but now, with gold pushing $4000, may sell.
Would help newly graduated (college) son.
Would cushion our household funds without selling stocks.
Anyone else have this? Keeping or selling? These are all raw, though, over the years, I did see people send some in to PCGS. I just don't think it is worth it.

did you check selling price on ebay too see if any premium is left?
Give or take, ~10% over spot on ebay...but that's before fees and any hassles.

BST possible?
Assuming you are talking Perth Mint Lunar Gold Series 1 in $100-1 oz size?
These are the last "bullion" coins in my "collection" that I would part with.
The dragon, in particular, commanded a premium because of its popularity due to significance of the year 2000, which also led to slight premiums for the snake (2001) and horse (2002). However, those 3 were the only years in the series to sell out (30,000). Other years with lower mintages such as the ox (1997) and tiger (1998) command slight premiums now. Looking at past sales on eBay, I think that these designs benefit more from grading than say an AGE looking for example at completed eBay auction sales.
Yeah, quite definitely, maybe
If he wants his sold. I'm debating my monkey one.
Dragon one maybe.
They are cool and, when I bought them gold was a lot less so they were more "fun".
Now, with gold where it is, it's more serious holding them.
I'd probably sell them before the 1oz AGEs I have actually.

Yep. That's them.
I have the 2000 Dragon, 2001 Snake, and 2004 Monkey in 1oz
Had the 1/2oz Dog put into necklace for wife.
For the graded ones, I won't necessarily disagree, but the sales on ebay are pre-fees and hassles. So, only a bit extra and just not worth it to me....may be for others.

Thanks for bringing the topic up as with many other cool gold coins, the premium is disappearing.
I have the first series one ounce set from 1996 on as at the time gold was around $400 to $600 an ounce. I’m not inclined to part with any of them at this point. I think the tiger is the best looking of the first series.
And I got a couple of dragons, just in case!
Yep...I remember wincing at the premiums on the dragon back then...LOL.
Paid $4xx for the monkey and $6xx for the dragon and winced.

what are the fam's opinions?
Wife on the "sell" side.
Kid surprised me and is on the "let's keep it then" side.
I told him I got it for him when he was ~1 or 2 or something...have to look at old receipts. I really expected him to say "sell" since I told him it would go in his account.

I agree with your son's opinion.
I knew it would happen.
If I am reading this correctly, you are the Monkey, son is a Snake, and wife is a Dog (I'm sure she's otherwise lovely). The Dog is loyal and honest, but not as intelligent as the Monkey. Snake is wise and intuitive and should not be disrespected. But, do realize how unlucky it might be to sell the Dragon while keeping the others.
Take it from another monkey, keep the lunars and consider selling an ounce or two of your AGEs at these high prices. Note that the only bird on the lunar calendar is the rooster, and if Ben Franklin had gotten his way, the turkey would have been the national symbol of US.
Son is actually Horse.

He must have been a little too outspoken about not selling?
I have a set of the first 12 Australian One Ounce Lunar coins. All still in the original capsules. Technically raw, but we bought 10 each for inventory each year when they first came out, so they were not returns, and I got to pick the one I bought from the 10.
how did they sell?
Didn't buy much but I believe I have the 2oz rooster MS69 (2017), dog MS70 (2018), pig MS70 (2019) all graded by our host. If anyone wants em let me know and I will go unearth them from the back 40. RGDS!
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.
BOOMIN!™
Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
?
He was actually calm but solid in his answer not to sell.
He is also 1/2 asian though that side doesn't do the Chinese zodiac really. I was surprised he didn't want to sell

i assumed that those for inventory were for sale
I also have the complete set of silver versions from then (+1 or 2 extra) in the holder.
I like them

Of course. We had five or six people building sets like I and one other guy at the store were doing. The extra few usually sold eventually.
Also have the fractionals of the first year that the Tiger came out, as that is my year AND I am from Detroit!
The bats finally woke up today! (Sorry, wrong forum).
@Bochiman
Two things:
To keep things on track with your post and to answer exactly "Anyone else that used to get the Australian "Year of the xxxxx" (Chinese zodiac)?"
No, I did not.
.
The second thing was to just say hello to you.

So which years still command a premium at these levels?
Should still be Dragon, Snake, Horse, imo, but I think that premium has shrunk to almost no extra premium.
When I looked at ebay, things were ~10-15% above spot for sale prices BUT then, once you take out ebay/payment fees, it is really negated.
When I look at some others, from the same series, they are a little less, but not much. Maybe a couple hundred $$$ difference

The prices on many collectible bullion coins with no premium has outrun the prices of 1 year ago (for the same coins) that included premiums. That being the case, it doesn't make as much sense to buy into that market now. As time goes on, assuming that precious metal prices continue to increase - the justification for premiums on specialty silver just isn't there.
I knew it would happen.
Even though some still hope for the Dragon to hold some mystical premium, and in the mind of some buyers and sellers it does, my limited data suggests the nominal premiums on these 1oz coins, grouped in order of highest to lowest is as follows:
Ox (lowest mintage)
Rat (first year)
Dragon (year 2000 significance)
Tiger
Rabbit
Rooster
Dog
Goat
Monkey
Pig
Horse
Snake
On another note if you are selling any of these coins back to a bullion dealer, I'm guessing the offer is about equal to an AGE.
Thanks. I guess if I don't need the money I will just sit on them.
