Aftermarket boxes for proof silver eagles?

logger7logger7 Posts: 9,178 ✭✭✭✭✭

I wasn't aware that there are "aftermarket" boxes for proof silver eagles, I got this message from someone who bought one:

"I received your shipment and it was intact and packaged well. The box, however, is an aftermarket box and not the correct one that came with the coin originally. Do you have the box you could send me?"

Original mint box will have certificate of authenticity:

One of many aftermarket boxes not sold by the US mint:

Interesting. I didn't know that either. On a related topic, I wish the US Mint would offer coins with no packaging other than a capsule. For me, packaging is just clutter that takes up space in home safes, bank safe deposit boxes, or wherever else you store your coins. And for people who get their coins grade by PCGS or elsewhere, once the coin is in the slab the box no longer has any relevance. If I had a choice, I'd never pay more for a coin just to get a box.

there's a good market for mint boxes (packaging) without the coin on ebay, I used to buy 100 at a time from dealers who submitted coins for grading and who didn't want the packaging, and then I'd resell single packaging on ebay. Many buyers want the packaging to go with a graded coin the purchased that did not come with packaging.

These are the ones I have, same as the one I sent, I have no idea what he is talking about for after market.

note the difference between my 2025 coin box pictured and your 2021 coin box. You buyer might not be aware that there was a design change for the box sleeve between 2021 and 2025. If you didn't include the accompanying certificate, that might be his complaint. Otherwise tell him to do the research, he received the correct mint packaging for 2021 coin.

The mint did this around the turn of the century. i have several commens that came in a capsule and tiny envelope.

And the Mint changed the box color & layout several times going back to 1986.

Got feed up with prices after 2021 and sold collection, had the subscription for over 25 years and back-filled the early dates. Believe these are in date order from 86 and only missing the 94, and the special proofs. The box changed several times

    Ditto...and around same time period.
I used to display them all, at home, as I liked them, but with the price increases, I got tired of playing the Mint's game and sold.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
