1953 Bowman Mickey Mantle PSA 3 - “Before and After”

At the risk of beating a dead horse on the old cert vs. new cert discussion, I saw this one for sale on eBay and found the grade fascinating compared to a recent grade.

Clearly shows the higher grading standard today….

Comparison doesn't matter. I agree with SDSportsFan. Definitely a tampered slab.

    Farewell Ryno.

Here's PSA cert #14039925, the card immediately after the one in the OP:

I know there are some PSA slab experts on here who can answer this. Does the label generation match the slab generation on that 14039924 cert?

That slab in the first post has alot of frosted edges, particularly the lower right edge. I agree with @SDSportsFan it appears that the slab was cracked open and the PSA 3 replaced with a junk card.

That’s why the slabs frost when popped open.

if the card looks sharp and graded by psa, sgc, cgc or bgs -- im fine with it. im not so sure psa is really "better". i've decided the look of the card is what's important. so if a cgc 8 ryan looks as good orbetter than a psa one, i have no problem paying more or the same thing. there are so many difference in grading now, its hard to say which one is better.

there are 834 1987 topps nolan ryan. -- 20% of the cards graded. the other 3 grading companies combined have less than 50 gem mint ryan's. there are many other examples of this. hard to believe 20$ of these are really 10's.

look for the gaps in pricing to start to close.

Well, I'm utterly confused and need a drink or a sedative, or maybe both.

    Farewell Ryno.

No thanks bro. That was 50 years ago. I shoulda been spending my cash on ‘75 Topps wax packs back then. 😏

    Farewell Ryno.
