Question on selling cards at the national or any other major convention.

I'm curious on how much one can expect to receive selling high grade (PSA 8-9) vintage cards at a convention. I'm not talking about the dealers that have a table - I'm talking about the average joe who attends a convention looking to sell buy and trade. To be specific I'm talking about Hall of Famers from the 70's in PSA 8 and 9 condition that typically sell between $50-$150,

When I watch some YOUTUBE videos I see lots of dealers with signs saying they are buying. There's a huge sports card convention that starts tomorrow in Anaheim that is advertising over 700 tables and will go on from Friday-Sunday. I'm thinking about bringing 50-70 cards to sell or trade but if I'm going to get offers of 50% of current market value I don't want to waste my time. I can always submit them to 4SC on consignment and get about 85% of the final sale which should be close to top dollar. But of course I would have to wait about a month to get the funds. Therefore, if I can get around 75% in cash or trade it would be worth me brining my cards to the convention.

Any help and information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

The dealers who advertise their ability to do so will get you the best return on your cards, such as a company like 4SC. If you walk your $50-150 cards up to a dealer at a large convention, you would be more likely to receive a 50% offer. Waiting a month to get paid from a consignment company wouldn’t be a problem if you’re getting the most money now would it?

Good points but having extra cash to spend in case I find a card I really want would be nice. I'm not going to sell anything unless I see an item I really want and don't have enough cash on hand to buy it.

If it’s worthwhile to you to make the trip, pay for parking, pay $30 to attend and find someone who wants to buy or trade with you, who knows? You might find a connection which lasts beyond the show.

With 4SC are there any tax liability/reporting of the transaction with them?

Waiting to get the most bang for your buck,$ return, with a reliable company would be the way to go I would think.

  • I wouldn't suggest going to a show trying to sell the cards to a dealer. the dealers will come up with an excuse of "it doesn't move", "have too many already, etc,...

Stick to consigning them or setting up at a show yourself.

Well the result is in. There are at least 100 dealers with signs saying they are buying but most were for cards valued over $500.

I just sold the 62 cards for 75 percent of recent comps which I'm happy with.

There's a high end 57 PSA 8 Snider that I'm going to get. This show is packed and I highly recommend for anyone who lives in Southern California.

I'd love to get down for that Anaheim show sometime but no way this weekend.

It looks like you answered your own question quite adequately. Congrats on the new acquisition.

    Farewell Ryno.
