I'm just wondering when a batter hits a home run, if she will yell "touchdown"?
I was wondering when a pitcher hits a batter with a pitch, if she will hurry out to the mound, and tell the pitcher, "You've been a bad boy, go to your room."
It's shocking that this woman is the first, I mean they have had female refs in the NFL for awhile, I can't believe MLB didn't push to have this done much sooner
Pasted from AI:
Women do not generally have better eyesight than men; rather, there are distinct physiological and perceptual differences. On average, women have a higher prevalence of vision loss but excel in color differentiation and broader peripheral vision, while men are often better at visual acuity, detail perception, and tracking fast-moving objects. These differences are attributed to factors like hormone levels and evolutionary adaptations for ancestral roles.
Be interesting to see how she calls balls and strikes on a MLB level, based on the above info.
She couldn't possibly do any worse than some of the masculine dead weight behind home plate we all need to witness on a daily basis.
Farewell Ryno.
100% Agreed
Is there an over/under as to when a player is going to get into a heated argument with the female ump?
If there is, I'm taking the 4th inning and the under. 😂
Will they bump chests though lol
Which is exactly why theyve basically all put themselves out of a job with the robo umps coming since their union protects the really bad ones.

It took Angel Hernandez suing MLB to make it happen.
I wish Lasorda,Weaver, and Pinella were still managing. Her going up against one of these 3 in a debate would be classic.
I haven’t heard anything related here. Can you explain?
Not sure if this is just a coincidence, but it is Barbie doll night at the game.
Plus a free Shirley Temple drink with every paid admission.
I'm predicting tonight's game will be the first in MLB history, in which every pitch is called a strike.
Also the first MLB game to ever end in a 0-0 tie, both teams with no hits.
I just hope the woman umpire staying at a hotel, doesn't get lost driving to the ballpark.
In all fairness, it is a complicated traffic route. The hotel is right across the street.
All I know about Angel Hernandez is that he was one of the worst Umps in MLB history and the most hated Ump in MLB history
What does he have to do with this female Ump?
Did anyone watch the game?
Probably nothing. He kept his job as long as he did from the union and the lawsuits.
What I know about her is she spent many years umpiring in the minors and seems to have earned the shot. She did some spring training games years ago and I think shes been a minor league umpire for a couple decades where the minors have had a few female umpires.
Fire AJ Preller
All kidding aside, I think she will do a fine job. And she will likely land some fat endorsement deals.
Wouldn't surprise me one bit if she becomes the wealthiest umpire of all time.
In all honesty I think the umpire position is essentially getting phased out because of all the Joe Wests and Angel Hernandezs etc that just were not good and made the game about them. Between the challenges that they dont like overturning their peers, the experiments with the pitch challenge by pitchers, and the robo strike zone they just arent going to mean much anymore in a couple years. Once they get comfortable with working the glitches out of the robo strike zone theyre going to put it in
That said everything I have seen about her does seem that she worked her way up the hard way over many years and I believe shes also a former softball catcher. I would rather see her get a chance if it means some of these awful ones we currently have start getting phased out
Fire AJ Preller
I wish that they would just go to robo umps for balls and strikes.
for the bases, i dont care.
just get the calls right
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
I honestly wonder what took so long. Like, I don't really see any real difference gender wise regarding whether one makes the right calls or not. And hasn't the NBA had a few female refs for the past few decades? In any event I wish her the best and I hope this isn't like any sort of undue pressure on her but I've no doubt there's a lot of potential future female umps counting on her to succeed.

It still needs some work but it will be a point of discussion in the upcoming CBA. Its ultimately going to help the pitchers and devalue the catchers as framing wont matter anymore. It likely wont be a major point of contention as the challenge system getting experimented with seems to be popular, but the players will likely use it as leverage for something else in return
Fire AJ Preller
Theres not, but basically two major issues. The first is just that the jobs dont really open up very often. MLB for whatever reason wont put there foot down to have a merit based system with the umpires. Its basically a job for life unless you retire or get caught gambling. I believe the average age of getting a chance is mid 30s and theres some 60+ that just wont retire. Joe West who was terrible was just shy of 70 when he finally retired and had been there for decades.
There are unfortunately politics with it too like anything else where you have to be liked by the higher ups to get into the pipeline for promotion as opposed to it being strictly merit based and demoting the ones that just arent very good holing the job. Theres umpires out there in the minors and college that are better than some of the MLB ones which is why the push for the robo umps is happening.
Ironically the umpire that got fired for sharing a gambling account with someone else betting on baseball was actually one of the better ones behind home plate
Fire AJ Preller
Looks like she will fit right in. Calling strikes off the plate almost as good as the boys.

I know they have the umpire union but the point was theyre pretty much all replaceable. Theres a few that are really good but most of the long time ones just arent which is why they keep pushing in the direction of making them obsolete. When it comes to the CBA with the players the owners take hard stances and TC is a terrible leader for the players. When it comes to the umps MLB is just like okay sure

Watched a couple of the games. She did fine.
She actually seems like a very nice person.
But I'll be honest with ya, from some pics on the internet, she gets that look on her face that would frighten the yell out of me. If I'm batting and she called a strike that was thrown in the dirt, I'd say thank you Maam may i have another. 😂
I wouldn't want that coming at me. 😂

It was only one game but I might be out on her. MLB average for umpires is 90 percent accuracy, she was 91 percent so overall a little better, but shes also almost 50. She had some egregious strikes called on her misses.
We will see if she cleans it up but we really dont need another 50 year old average umpire that will have misses calling strikes that wouldnt even be a strike in high school
Fire AJ Preller
That ^^^ is what I saw. No excuse for some of those calls off the plate. The high strikes I can live with. First game though. Probably lots of nerves and adrenaline. Just look at the first pitch. Strike. 4 inches off the plate.
Her first game video snippets:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/avhfL3TZpV0?feature=share
I didn't watch the game. But from those snippets, it seems the players were on their "best behavior" as far as not making the ump look bad, etc.
A few of those calls were brutal. But I'm sure that short video clip likely chose the worst.
Would have been interesting to see how she called a close play at the plate.
They likely did get warned about it and she did seem like she wanted to call a strike that first pitch.
But that video wasnt even the worst misses other than that first one. There were multiple pitches that just cannot be called strikes when they are 2-3 inches inside or 2-4 inches outside regardless of her overall rating. One guy struck out on a pitch over 2 inches outside. That just should not happen
There wasnt really a bias which is good but some of those just cant be missed. The borderline touching ones every player understands those are a coin flip but 2 inches out that should be easy. Even though a couple guys got hits in the abs and a couple guys benefited from clear strikes it does change the course of the ab either way.
I dont think its a publicity stunt, but I wasnt impressed with another average umpire and the brutal calls are the biggest issues with the umps

Angel Hernandez sued MLB for denying him postseason assignments, claiming it was because of his race. Among other things, he cited that only one non-white umpire had worked the World Series between the years 2011 and 2016. While his lawsuit was unsuccessful, it highlighted that MLB's hiring policies for umpires were not exactly progressive. Al Barlick, who was in charge of hiring and scouting umpires for decades, had a long history of sexist, racist, and anti-semitic comments and the hiring policies mirrored him. MLB, recognizing that eventually a better umpire than Hernandez would similarly file suit, stepped up their hiring diversity. And thus we have Jen Pawol who, by all accounts, is 100% qualified.
Hernandez lost his lawsuit because he was one of the worst umpires. He even had 3 calls over turned at first base in a single divisional playoff game. It didnt highlight anything, the lawsuit kept him from getting fired for being awful. Players hated him, social media and replay exposed him, his umpire ratings came out in the lawsuit, and he retired a few years later when there was no more hiding how bad he was at his job

Ok. I can see how that might influence a particular selection here. I’m no where near familiar enough with the bevy of umpires in waiting to know which cardinal has the inside lane to the flag.
Will await her first tossing of a player or manager.
She might get mad and scratch the player's or manager's face. 😉
Again though I really want to see how chest bumping is viewed 😂😂😂
It's like you didn't even read what I wrote. The lawsuit was a wake up call for MLB even though Hernandez had no chance of winning because he sucked. But somebody better than him would have had a case since MLB very clearly had an issue with their hiring and promotion policies. They dodged a bullet from an unpopular plaintiff with no case and took the opportunity to correct their course.
Its also like you didnt read what I wrote. The lawsuit was not a wakeup call for MLB at all in any way shape or form. All the lawsuit did was expose Hernandez for being a terrible umpire that should have been fired years ago.
There was 0 racial discrimination against Hernandez, if anything he was getting preferential treatment because of it getting playoff assignments that he didnt deserve.

This is a clear-cut case of mental rigidity. Get out the crayons.
