Joe Dimaggio "find" - Thoughts?

jlzinckjlzinck Posts: 910 ✭✭

So I found this in a collection I purchased and paid no mind to it until last night.
It resembles a 1947 Bond Bread Joe D. When I saw the personalized auto I thought it might be legit. Pulled it out of the sleeve and see it is signed on the back as well.
The card itself doesn't seem to match up with the 47 Bond examples I have seen.
The card stock seems to be there. At 1st when I saw it I thought it was a photocopy

What are your thoughts on the card and autographs as this is way out of my comfort level.

DiMaggio is one of the most forged Baseball autographs. Which is good news as the Volume they see provides authenticator's vast experience and expertise. Same goes for Mantle..

I remember reading that Joe always made the 2nd "g loop" a little smaller than the first; also hard to believe someone would forge something with a personalization since it makes the sig less desirable in consideration to the vast amount of sigs he made.

    From chatGPT:

    🖋️ 1. The Double “g” Loops
Authentic DiMaggio: The second “g” loop is almost always smaller than the first. The first loop is open and round, while the second is slightly tighter and more angular.
Forgeries (especially Marino): Both “g” loops are often identical in size and shape, almost mechanical-looking—very symmetrical. This is unnatural and rarely seen in Joe’s hand.

On the card - have no real experience but the original version - I believe - has rounded corners; there was a "find" supposedly of "square" cornered versions from a warehouse and sold as a set in SCD in the early 90s - supposedly very light stock - I never trusted buying the set. Both cards are full bleed (no borders) - have no real idea if authentic?

Good luck if you sub for authentication.

Both the item and sig need to be authentic not to lose on sub costs...

Seems to me the profit vs risk is not favorable.

There was a time before the 1980's that the big stars would sign through the mail and I had received Joe D's address from a hobby friend and I thought I would give it a try. Around 1978 I sent out this card and a few weeks later I received it back with a full, personalized autograph. I was never fully sure if it was authentic but it was cool just to have it. Fast forward to the mid to late 80's I knew someone who was considered an autograph expert who I asked if he thought it was real and when he saw it his eyes lit up and said that it was indeed real. It was worth sending to PSA just to be sure and they agreed with my friend and slabbed this beautiful card for me.

I am not an autograph expert so perhaps you can use mine to compare with.

I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!
