Found a 1959 D wheat reverse penny. AUTHENTIC.

Found in small shop in Charleston SC. Sent to US Treasury for verification as authentic. Response using microscopy and electron scanning microscope, They found to be authentic. They said this is the second one now that is surfaced. I truly do not know where to go from here. PCGS and NGC will not grade it because it’s not supposed to exist. Is selling to auction house option, I guess or hold onto it. I could use some serious advice..

It looks like a counterfeit do to the mushy details on the reverse and the weird font of the date compared to other 1959s I've seen. Also the color just doesn't seem right (the surface looks unnaturally grainy).

  • I get it. Those are my thoughts too, so I immediately as I said, send it in to the treasury department and have them go ahead and verify to tell me if this is a fake and they’re saying it’s authentic I don’t know.

  • Metal composition is correct. The weight is correct. It doesn’t seem to have the polishing marks like the other one that was found in 87 does who knows they said there are more out there, but I don’t know. I can’t know my hands. I don’t know about this just my thoughts

Need a clear photo of the mintmark to compare style.
Yours looks a bit different from the style used in 1959.
This is the only mm used in 1959

Can you post a photo of the letter you received from the US Treasury Department?
