Greg Morris Consignment Rates and Alternatives

Hi,

As we all know GMC gets ridiculous prices on mid grade and better raw vintage. I was going to send another batch to them but just looking on their website- they’re now up to 25% commission on vintage raw. Sheesh! Seems they were well under 20% last I sent some in.
Anybody on here have any alternatives to suggest?

Rates are high but I still think I get the highest net there, for the least amount of effort.

They’ve been at 25% for quite awhile. Be selective and then hope for a good wave of bidders to jump in on your cards. I’ve had nights when the numbers were bonkers, and a few not so good. Do some advance research on completed auctions to see what’s hot and what’s being oversold. You’ll be glad you did.

Considering the prices GM routinely gets and how much work selling raw single's can be, 25% seems more than fair to me.

The 25% is a cult tax

Well, we could see how good we do with the “other guys”, oh wait….what other guys??? I suppose it’s just a matter of how much you want to move if you think the time is right. My take: without the luxury of having someone else’s crew doing my dirty work, I’d be a lot worse for the wear doing it alone.

All valid points. Nobody else really takes raw vintage unfortunately. It is a tough game so I get it. Would be nice to see another player out there in the space take it on.

Does Greg Morris have a minimum amount requirement? Will he take a consignment for cards that will sell for $1,000 or less in total? If not is there a legit seller that receives good prices of raw vintage that does?

I'm surprised no legit competitors have emerged. With graded consignments, we first had PWCC and then probstein and 4sc came in. I guess it's too much work for most people to tackle having to grade every card and then deal with returns.

This is assembly line style work they're doing. As time has progressed, I've noticed some trends with regard to the handling of consignments and the conditions of the cards. I've noticed also, that quite a lot of what is being sold raw has perhaps been acquired at shows, as they seem to have someone on the road almost every weekend. So, they are "fitting in" outside consignments, but giving priority to their own set acquisitions. I think the grading habits have changed as well, or multiple people are handling the assignment and their opinions about condition are not always consistent.

I agree with that. They do advertise that they will consign or buy collections. I know they also buy lots at auction and break them down card-by-card. I agree also on the grading. My consignment of '71 baseball got graded fairly strictly while many of the '71s listed as NM-MT are NM at best. I picked NM to NM+ cards out of a large vending lot I purchased and about half got lumped into a lot as Good to Ex-MT condition. Maybe a beater in good condition got put in there accidentally but I doubt it.

I recall from an older agreement that they included a statement essentially declaring that just because you see a card listed with a particular grade doesn't mean they will accept the same card from a consignor. I think in a broader sense it just means they would be stricter on our submissions to have the confidence that their customers won't be so inclined to return consigned cards. On their own material, I suppose it doesn't affect them as much. Returns are easily recycled.

I’ve been sending them thousands of cards for a year plus now. I would never ever get what they do in 10 yrs .
Just finished my last consignment this week and the next goes tomorrow. I even sent a small graded group to them in the $5000-$5500 range and they exceeded my expectation.
