I don't see how Tatis Jr can get out of this unless he would be considered too young ( 17 ) to legally sign something binding?

Yeah, I don't see the contract being upheld fully. 17 years old and he's stuck with a lifelong deal? Doubtful.

I dunno, the guy gladly took the 2 million dollars up front. That's a lot of friggin' money.

It's only 10% of his earnings for crying out loud. He's still going to make a large fortune on the 90%.

He should be thankful, and not act like a whiny brat. 👎

I dont really get why he ever signed that. His dad made a lot when he played. The minors are awful which is why so many guys stay in college. I get why some guys that think they wont get to the pros do it but I dont like the whole thing at all.

If they let Tatis out of the deal due to his age then he should have to give back that $2million mentioned by @stevek.

That would make sense unless he has already given them 10% of earnings so far

given it was a TERRIBLE deal, but he chose to sign on the dotted line. He made the deal. He should have had just a little forethought and not signed such a deal. It is not like he did not know the terms of the deal, he is just unhappy now. He basically signed a gigantic and stupid paycheck loan.

Idiot. no way he should be able to get out of it. I am going to guess that he had a parent/guardian co-sign the deal with him.

“I’m fighting this battle not just for myself but for everyone still chasing their dream and hoping to provide a better life for their family,” Tatis said in a statement provided by a publicist. “I want to help protect those young players who don’t yet know how to protect themselves from these predatory lenders and illegal financial schemes — kids’ focus should be on their passion for baseball, not dodging shady business deals.”

    😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I wonder if he blew out a knee, right after receiving the money, and could never play baseball again, if he would have given back the 2 million?

Don't prospective music stars sign deals like this all the time, and have for many decades? I've never heard that such contracts were illegal.

I mean the company is playing a numbers game. Perhaps say 99 out of 100 potential music stars hardly ever make a dime professionally. They're just not good enough. But the company is banking on that 1 out of 100 who makes it big, and so overall the company makes a profit on the venture.

The kid knew exactly what he was signing, why he was signing it, and I'd guess that likely if not definitely his parents or a guardian co-signed it.

Im not entirely sure how singing the deal in the DR is going to impact things legally. Steve is right the lenders are playing a numbers game and Craig is right its basically a payroll loan.

These deals are petty new overall and the Reyes trying to get interest from him for playing in Japan that seems like a problem.

Unless you dont think youre going to make it dont sign it for sure

There's a reason minors generally can't sign contracts or be held to them.
