Heritage Auction (Session #1...closed tonight 5/16)...Share your Winnings

I had a stake both in selling and in buying at this auction. Generally pleased with my sales with the 1963 Willie McCovey PSA-9 setting a record at $8845...and a 1966 Mantle PSA-8.5 realizing the 2nd highest price for an 8.5 at $9760. The biggest disappointment was the 1975 Nolan Ryan PSA-8.5 (high end for the grade) selling below the estimate of $2,000 at $1586.
I am very happy to share my two (2) wins. I needed a cleanup hitter for my 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 PSA-5...so picked up a 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92 PSA-6. The card has gorgeous color and decent centering.
Then...I finally landed a 1948-49 Leaf Jackie Robinson Rookie SGC-5. The card has a relatively clean, bright, bold yellow backdrop, helping to make the image of Jackie Robinson pop. Yes, the image has a red tint, but it is difficult to find one in my price range without any red tint whatsoever. Also...the centering side-to-side is perfect or nearly so and without a skewed image...top-to-bottom is 75/25 (guessing). 7s sell for $75,000...6s, $35,000-40,000. Being retired...I can no longer put new money into my collection. So...if I want a card, I have to consign cards to fund any transaction now. And a Leaf Robinson RC in a grade higher than a 5...my collection would take too big of a hit. Here are my winnings. Please, share your winnings and/or observations.
I noted a 1998 Skybox Ken Griffey Jr (Essential Credentials Now) PSA-9 (#4/10)...it sold for $280,000.
There is an interesting story, which I inadvertently was cc by Heritage. Another person has a raw copy and put it on Ebay very recently for $15,000. Well...it was bought in less than a minute. Then...the seller received offers of $50,000 and $75,000...and realized it was worth much more. So...he pulled it. A Heritage employee saw the transaction go down...and apparently contacted this individual. Anyway...the owner is now looking to consign it with Heritage. Here are my wins...last night.

Beautiful cards, love the Robinson.
Congrats. Those are incredible additions. As the auction sites like to say, each is a "great cornerstone to any collection." 😄 I'd also say they are outstanding examples for the grade and just display incredibly well. Great choices of cards to pursue.
I saw that PSA 9 Skybox Griffey for 200,000 too and sent a note a friend saying what the absolute heck. Think a Select Mirror Gold Griffey PSA 8 was at 30,000 or so too. Cant say I have knowledge of that space but wow.
I was appreciating Ted Williams in this auction. Won a 48 Leaf and a 56 Topps. Actually dont have a card of his but after this 2 so happy about that. Been appreciating similar sets. Last Heritage was 33 Goudey and this one 48 Leaf.
Been appreciating the 48 Leaf Ted for a while. I realize the centering on this one is not incredible but for me I can appreciate other things. A lot of these dont look great to me because they have a brown staining, discoloration, color may be faded and you can see the paint loss/snow. So I liked the color on this one for a 75+ year old card. Then in general just love the image which kind of made this a had to have. The centering on the 56 maybe balances out the lack of it on the 48.
I also chose to consign a bit to finance it.
Ulysses..
Those Ted Williams cards are beautiful….the color pops. I look for colorful cards. Congrats!
I got shut out. I really wanted that 1975 PSA 9 Hank Aaron. I was the under bidder and it went for over $10k with the juice. It was one of the better examples out there but I'm just going to over pay so much at this point in my life.
Thanks. Much appreciated. Looking forward to receiving them. I'm sure you are as well.
One observation I had with the auction results and all the SGC PSA comp banter was I was originally considering either a PSA 5 54 Aaron or an SGC 5 54 Aaron. In time I was outbid and decided to let them go and save some dry powder for later but found it very interesting this morning to see both sold for the exact same dollar amount. I think its kind of a fascinating situation where we feel yeah, PSA gets the higher dollar for the same card same grade but the exceptions are kind of interesting. Think older sets (maybe pre-70s) and the most sought players you may get a closer price on a case by case basis.
SGC cards are becoming more respected and valued…
Great pickups Monte and glad you added some grail cards to the collection. The 75 Aaron final card in the set for over $10k was surprising - did not know that example went for so much more than the #1 card.
Only had one pickup in the auction last night - this little number for my PC. Was also looking at the Jordan rookie in an 8.5 which went for just a little over $10k which was well centered.
Nice looking cards Monte.

Here is my lone winner from last night. Was bidding on your 66 Mantle but had to drop out
WOW beautiful pick-ups. Love every card shown here really nice for the grade in every case. I really thought I bid to win a '57 Clemente but was underbidder.
I did win a set that i am excited for. The '51 panels are a strange item in that it seems this was the most common way to obtain the cards but for some reason they have been hard for me to find and the pop counts are low. Seasoned collectors seem to say they are not very tough but I don't see them very often. The ones on eBay are always expensive. A couple I might try to upgrade over time but this was so much more economical than buying them 1 at a time. The whole set wasn't shown but all are graded and the conditions noted. There are two variations that I will now try to get to make it a Master Set.
Brad…
Did the panels come in packs? That’s a very cool set…congrats!

Beautiful ‘64 Mantle! Didn’t you win a ‘66 Mantle PSA-8.5 in the last Heritage Auction? Cornering the market on ‘66 Mantle cards in an 8.5? Thanks for bidding …it went up $2750 in extended bidding!
I did. Certain cards don't come up in auction very often so when I have a chance to buy them I do. Then I saw yours and gave it a try. Sometimes I will be multiples to examine them. Then keep the better example and sell the other one later on.
First time buying through Heritage, has anyone received their invoice from session 1?
Not yet. It usually takes them a couple of days to email or post them to your account.
Picked up the 96 Mirror Gold Maddux as it’s the first that I’ve seen in a while. I would rather one of the four PSA 10’s, but no telling when one will pop up. All of the mirror golds that heritage auctioned off were recently graded as they have sequential serial numbers.
This completes my red, blue and gold run!

Nice pickup on the Greg Maddux...beautiful card!
Panels came in complete sets along with a game board and packs with panels on each side of the ‘51 Connie Mack All Stars. Aparently the packs with them separated came out last to get rid of the leftovers. Those were the only pack form where they came seperated but were the most common.
Congrats on super tough Maddux.
Pretty awesome pick-ups. Congrats to all.
Beautiful cards Monte!
