As far back as 1992 people wrote to Beckett complaining about too many sets coming out every year...but at least in the 90s there was the Big Five card companies (with Pacific being like the Sixth Ranger) so at least the different sets were more distinctive from one another.
Up until 1994 I collected any and all items listed for Topps in the SCD Standard Catalog, including all variations. In 1995 the proliferation of new products ( which they stopped listing in 2012) caused me to give that up and just get the basic Topps set, any update to it just to keep the run going.
I also did the annual Heritage sets beginning in 2001,including any high number addition to it. I do all the SP and basic insert sets that make up a master set but stopped chasing variations in 2011 when there were green, red and blue variants for full series, and they greatly expanded the number and scarcity of other variation cards
At least with Heritage there's SOMETHING that actually appeals to me...as for regular Topps I've been stuck on 2013 (how far my set sequence goes) for many years and while I would like to someday get it caught up some, that's what, around ~$50 per year and all those binders/pages it'd take...
And I hope I don't make the modern collectors mad here but honestly regular Topps and Heritage is all that appeals to me as far as stuff from this century goes.

So you're just like me and are all about that base! Though I do like collecting all the early-mid 90s insert sets I can too...

It’s crazy, and yes, very reminiscent of the stuff from the 90’s that wrecked the hobby.
What many don't get, then and now, there was never any law that said you HAVE to have all the sets...if you were content with the Big Three of the 80s (Donruss/Fleer/Topps) you could still be content with that into the 90s. And at least the Heritage series gives me something in this century that I can actually have genuine interest in collecting as it matches up with my 70s sets...and hopefully it'll continue into the 2030s decade with the 80s sets! Boy am I gonna feel super old and ancient come 2029 when my birth year Heritage (1980) comes out...
I was turned off…much sooner when Fleer, Donruss, Score, and Upper Deck issued cards in the 1980s. I focus on the 50s and 60s…true vintage. And picked up a Ruth from the 1933 Goudey set …and eyeing a 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson RC.
Topps announced that the 2025 Football products are all delayed until the license kicks in early 2026. So they will be milking 2024 for a while until that cow drops dead

It's a shame football Heritage didn't catch on back in the day...

Ah, what I like to call the Golden Age (1948-69) as it not only ends on the end of the decade, it's also the years of the king of baseball cards, Mickey Mantle! As for me the best I can do is collect in the Silver Age (1970-80)...and wouldn't you know it, the first year of that era and the first year of the 70s happens to have silver color borders!
Including the OP mentioned Resurgence, there are 5 more 2024 Topps FB products yet to be released. I’ll be glad once there is balance to the Ultra Modern market with the license and rookie autos under one company
