I just bought this pattern, I don't know much about it, but I like the way it looks and I like the rarity. What do you guys think.
Auction Description:
Cape of Good Hope. British Colony copper-nickel Pattern Proof Penny 1889-V PR63 NGC, Brussels mint, KM-Pn4, KM-X4, Hern-C5. Estimated mintage of 20 pieces. A superb example of this very rare issue. Sharply struck, and lustrous, with reflective fields. The surfaces are free of significant contact marks, but small spots are noted on both sides. From the Royale Baldwin Collection.

I used to collect South Africa and still own some but not any pre-Union.
There are numerous variations of this "pattern", which is actually believed to have been a salesmen token.
I'm working on a set of all british territories under Queen Victoria. I always thought it was a shame no South African coins other than sovereigns had her portrait. Beautiful coin nonetheless.
I'm confused by your post.
Every South African Union coin dated 1953-1960 has the QEII Mary Gillick portrait. That's 11 denominations from the 1/4d to the pound (sovereign).
Whoops I meant Victoria not Elizabeth. My bad.
