Topps Card Wrappers

Hi, I am interested in getting a 1967 or 1968 wax card pack wrapper. I have seen some ebay listings of these described as "reproductions". Is there any simple way to distinguish between a repro and authentic? Thanks in advance!

Not being a wiseguy but originals should have a old mustly light bubblegum smell the repos don't

I am not sure but I really like the 1968 wrapper. I wish I never sold the one I have.

A lot of it is experience. While it is not always obvious from a scan, it is very obvious when you have the wrapper in hand. The original wax paper has a very different feel than repros, plus you can usually still see the roller marks.

  • Nice! Love the box! It's amazing the things like this survive. Ever fantasize about full boxes of these lurking in back storerooms of shuttered convenience stores?

I've heard of where some will put the wrapper in a plastic baggy with the bubblegum for a certain amount of time to hopefully transfer the scent to the wrapper. Guess one has to do the Topps gum sniff test to establish it's authenticity.

That sounds like something our former member bubble bath girl would do.

Wrapper Collecting used to be a big, but usually very reasonably priced, segment of the Non-Sport Hobby. Not sure if still the case.

I've many 1960s-1970 Non-Sport wrapper. Stooges/Apes/Get Smart/Gilligan/Partridge/Brady/Mod Squad/Munsters and more. Low demand nowadays but some look very cool and display rather nicely

I sold all my pre 1977 topps and OPC wax packs and just bought/kept wrappers. I think I go back to 1960 with a few missing: 1961,1966 for Topps only have a few OPC.

One day I will get off my butt and do the wall display I planned on doing years ago.
