Counterfeit Washington Quarters Mixed with 90%

Bayard1908Bayard1908 Posts: 4,077 ✭✭✭✭

I recently purchased a roll of 90% quarters on eBay. These four counterfeit quarters were in the roll.

In addition to being crude, the head on the 1941 is too small and the head on the 1952 is too big. The reverses are all lacking detail. They all weighed less than 6 grams instead of 6.25g. The 1941 has a massive fin on the rim. None of the coins are magnetic.

I don't own a Sigma machine; however, I do own a number of Minelab metal detectors for hobby use. None of the coins gave the signal of a silver quarter on my favorite Minelab Etrac. Instead, they all gave a signal comparable to a Lincoln cent.

The seller said that he had owned the coins for approximately seven years. He also thought that nobody would bother to counterfeit a Washington quarter.

They appear to be modern counterfeits.

Is the seller offering any compensation for the duds?

Mix 4 in a legitimate roll and there's an extra $22 profit to the seller. Many people probably wouldn't even bother to check. However, those are very crude and would be easy to spot. Check his feedback to make sure he is not doing this to others. THKS!

Feedback is 100% positive; however, the seller is also selling Morgan dollars and silver Eagles, which I believe are the two coins most popular with Chinese counterfeiters. He also has Libertads and Maples for sale. It's hard to believe that this person has never heard of Chinese counterfeits.

I am hesitant to give negative feedback to someone who might have been fooled themself. Conversely, I also don't want someone distributing counterfeits, even if they do so unknowingly. Finally, it is possible that this person is deliberately selling counterfeits.

Care to share sellers username? Understand if you don't. Could be an honest mistake, if I didn't see flags on his other listings I would be hesitant to leave negative too. I am hoping he at least offered to partially refund for the 4 fakes. RGDS!

If you don't want to post the sellers name, email it to me along with country of origin and I will check to see if he
has had any other counterfeit listings reported. I can also check his current listings for counterfeits.

Let us know if the seller... happens to have other counterfeits being sold as legitimate. Right now, I give the seller the benefit of a doubt... BUT.,... seems odd that 4 bad ones ended up in that roll. If the seller is in fact selling other types of bullion coins... they likely have some knowledge of what what good bullion coins should look like? Just sayin'

And yes... I would hope you would be reimbursed for the bad ones.

If you want to get rid of these, I have a friend who is working with a group that are trying to stem the counterfeit coins in the US.
He would be really interested in looking at these.
I would be willing to buy them so you aren't out any money... also making sure they wouldn't be back in circulation.

no, not good in any respect to the untrained eye :'(

Seller is not cooperating with me on a refund, told me to "shove" the coins. I have left him a negative feedback.

Kind of says it all for me. File case with ebay and get your money back. At this point, I'd be thinking probably intentional on the part of the seller.... nice way to increase the profit by seeding a few of these in rolls. Most individuals would probably not even notice.

I sent those pictures to my guy and he's really interested in taking a look at these quarters.
Send me a PM if you want to get rid of them.
Have you done any other checks to see what they are made of?

It's possible the seller could say the buyer switched them out. Probably boils down to a he said,he said.

I wonder how many people buy rolls and throw them in their stash without even looking at coins?

Could certainly happen... but ebay will side with the buyer (though they may require the entire roll be sent back?)

Still waiting for the seller to be named so I can get a better look at the listing.
I have a friend who is interested in looking at these.
He does some work with an anti-counterfiting organization.
I'll post more details later when I get these in hand.
    Stay tuned...

I wonder if Alibaba is selling bag quantities of these for $20 or $30?

File a complaint with eBay. Seller will likely loose. If not, if your CC is linked to the account, dispute it.

Don't worry about that. I created this thread to alert others about a type of counterfeit that could easily be overlooked.

Look to be cast and silver plated over brass or bronze.

The OP told me his seller did not make good on the 4 quarters.

Thank you rte592 - the seller's intentions become clearer knowing this outcome.
