1984 sets psa 10's

donruss 31,500
fleer 9,700
topps 16,000
opc 1,600

over 35% of the donruss cards graded are psa 10's. that is totally ridiculous. this goes back to the $3 grading specials offered up to a few biggies. four shar.....

barely any cards sell for over $150 in psa 10. and then one sells for over $3,000.

I have a ton of ‘raw 84 fleer baseball I should have graded years ago. It’s a beautiful raw set. Too late.

There was a time when everyone was so enamored with 84 Donruss, maybe 2008-2010 and you could get your hands on it. Maybe 200 a box? Think tons were ripping and submitting. 4 Sharp was probably busting through cases. Set registry was very competitive and cards that gave people an advantage went for an extreme premium. Teufel maybe. Chris Chambliss. A lot of them came out pretty nicely centered outside of some of those premium low POP examples. Mattingly was very hard to pull as a 9 or 10. Think after ripping attempting to pull Gem Mint Mattingly and stars many were just submitting whatever looked like a 10 and then there was a glut. I remember getting a handful of PSA 10s of guys noone found too exiciting with what felt like high POPS at the time for 99 cents. Wish I would have pursued those more in retrospect. Just did not feel like a real winning proposition then. 99 cent and a few dollar cards but a lot are probably up 1000% or more since then.

I dont see why its ridiculous. I'm trying to figure out what the rant is for? 1984 Donruss is a very popular set. I'm sure the registry has a similar ratio. They are 1980's cards, still in packs and factory sets to this day. They come out Mint or better for a long while from now.

'84 Donruss always had the illusion of being printed in limited quantities and was always the most popular. It certainly was printed less thanTopps, but I think '84 Fleer is just as 'limited' as Donruss.

The Fleer set has grown on me as my favorite of that year. When fresh, the Fleer cards are so clean and bright. Nice simple design that works.

when I post about a certain set or card it usually has to do with investment/value of the card. I collect Mattingly cards of all types. Maybe the best player of the 80's.

The Mattingly Donruss is somewhat similar to the 1989 UD Griffey (although I would 100% prefer the Mattingly). An Iconic card with lots of value. But the number of 10's available is staggering ( for the set). And while the Mattingly isn't as high as it could be, to me the number of 10's (35% of the gradings are 10's out of 88,000), is kind of scary. Certainly if you get a Mattingly 10, it's going to be worth it (self-graded), but to purchase one for $3,000 seems a little over the top for the long-term.

Of course the 1982 Topps Traded Ripken is setting records to and it's a lot easier to come by than the Fleer card. And the Fleer card came out before the Topps Traded (usually the regular issue, first card of a player is really considered his rookie).

All true. I probably prefer the Donruss set to the Fleer only because I like the photos better.

Those Donruss seemed super tough to find back in 84, but Fleers seemed to be much easier. There is something super cool about the minimalist design of the Fleer set, but I never liked the photos as well. The Mattingly is a cool shot though.

Both are better than the 84 Topps set though. I have a hard time with that one.

Griffey UD is ridiculously overproduced. Mattingly is the better value going forward because he still has a shot to make the HOF...however, at $3,000 for a 10, I agree, that is a lot of coin when you can get a 9 that looks every bit as good for a fraction of the price.

I think there was a pretty epic 1984 donruss registry set thread here many years ago. many were ripping and subbing before prices went to the moon.

    1989 UD has 32,300 PSA 10's
    1984 Donruss has 31,500 PSA 10's

By far the most of any other sets by 10,000 or so. Lots of Fluff in those numbers.

Also, 1990 Leaf which is another iconic set, nearly 20,000 PSA10's. Renders the set almost helpless value wise.

I haven't looked it up to see what the ratio is for the 84 D set to the number subbed, but it's also a good indication of the quality of their cards that year. I recently got a handful of 10s on that set.

It's just a quality set that still holds up to being graded/compared to modern cards with current grading standards. Unlike anything Topps made in the 70s (at least as far as my subs go).

It's around 34% PSA 10's. The 1983's aren't that differently made. I agree that the 1984's look better. There are 3 big rookies that year, Boggs, Gwynn and Sandberg, all of whom ended being better players than Mattingly ( because of injuries, but hey that counts). Only 13,000 PSA 10's (around a 28% PSA 10 rate).

There is truth in that the cards were made not using cardboard, which eliminated some issues. But the issue becomes the centering front and back. I looked over a couple of pages of the 1984 Donruss PSA 10's on EBAY. It only takes a fraction of the centering to be off to make the card look off centered. And the backs on some of them are very close to not making the 75/25 centering. (very close as in probably didn't).

So when skimming through the PSA 10's you will notice that a decent amount don't (viewably) look like 10's, i.e. if I sent them in i wouldn't get a 10. I sent in a 1983 Donruss Gwynn pulled straight from a vending set that looked like a 10 on the front and maybe would get a 9 because of the back centering. They gave me an 8.

A great example is the 1983 Donruss Gwynn up for auction on EBAY. Going for $375. The front isn't quite centered, maybe 65/35 and the back is way off centered. Almost no border on the side. The one I got an 8 on was a 10 centering on the front and slightly better than the one on ebay. I thought it might get a 9 because of the back on mine. But no way should the one being auctioned be a 10. II certainly wouldn't get a 10.
