Bloom can't pony up the $$ for a super star, and known commodity like Bogaerts, but has a ton of $$ for a relatively unknown Japanese outfielder. Bloom has the Red Sox checkbook paying the Buffalo Orix team a stunning $15.375 MILLION posting fee to the Orix team, making the total investment of $105 million for Yoshida's 5 year deal. Shades of DiceK ???

I find it hard to believe that the Red Sox farm system is so shallow that a promising AA or AAA player couldn't be brought up to fill a spot on the roster. If I read the article correctly, Yoshida may be used as a DH, pretty pricey DH.

I agree that a trade should not be made to fill Bogey's spot.
Yoshida will not end up being the DH.
I have nothing else to do my friend but count the days till baseball and Nascar open up.
I also would watch the Astros with Orsillo and Eckersley calling the game..
Actually, Orsillo is an announcer with the San Diego Padres, but it would be a good fit, Eckersley is from California. His perennial tan tells me he likes the sun, but hopefully not too much.
No more than they paid Martinez to DH.
The point was that they could have promoted a promising prospect for a lot less money. At least Martinez had plenty of MLB history, Yoshida is an unknown commodity, other than playing in Japan, and has never played in MLB.
Money means nothing in baseball anymore.
Players want all they can get even more than they can spend in their lifetimes..
Owners have more the they know what to do with.
Fans are pissed off with owners that don't want to spend all their money on players.
Its just a shame what has happened to a great game.

Opt out contracts are becoming so common now that contracts are a joke.
Whats the use of a contract that will be thrown out when players know they can get more after one year they have been into it.
Mets owner gets fined over $75 million for going over guidelines and does not even bat an eyelash about it.
Or opt in when players know their market value is seriously diminished. Like Chris Sale getting $27.5m in 2023. What a joke him getting very close to a mil per start, assuming he doesn't have another wrist injury, destroy a clubhouse or come up with some other injury. IMO, he's right up there with Pedroia, HanRam, and the fatty at 3rd base, aka Sandoval. Sale always look angry at the world, never acknowledges the crowd, and just pouts his way off the mound.

Dick Williams, that's what this clubhouse needs, dump Cora. I predict the Red Sox will struggle to be contenders in 2023. The Bogaerts departure IMO, has affected the morale of the team, and now Devers, who is pi$$ed at the Bogaerts trade, will want Old Ironsides as his private yacht, the Boston Museum of Science and Logan airport to sign. I think he's gone. Last I read, he's asking $300m for 10 years. Bloom ain't gonna do that. I wouldn't get any hopes up for an exciting season, but, I could be totally wrong. I think the pitching situation is dismal, but nary a peep about key signings. Bloom is out of his league.
Not what you said. Sure, they could have promoted the next Bobby Dalbec or Jeter Downs for far less, and there is no reason to believe that Yoshida will even be as good as those two, but there is precedent even on the current Red Sox team to pay that much for a one-dimensional hitter.
Think of opt-outs as player options. I wonder if there is a legal reason to name them this way?
You're far more optimistic than I. I don't see this team able to contend for fourth place.
Having an "opt out" is only good for a player, not the team involved.
If player has a good year he opts out and goes for the big money.
If he has a bad year he is then going to stay for the next year.
They need to trade Raffy now because once he starts the se3ason his value good way down.
They have a replacement in house for him right now in Dalbec and he just might surprise everybody if given the chance.
I will give the new guy a few months to get acclimated into the season. who knows, maybe he will be a great player. I honestly dont know a thing about him

Well, it depends how much the team would have to pay without the "opt out".
Dalbec has over 800 MLB at bats with a career OPS+ of 101. Devers, two years younger, has a career OPS+ of 124. Last year the difference was 80 to 141. How much of a chance do you want to give Kevin Maas (oops, I mean Dalbec)?
I agree about trading Devers, I mean if they don't intend to make a serious attempt to either contend or give him a long term contract. The Bogaerts fiasco must not be repeated.
I agree about Dalbec but they need a 3rd baseman and he is one. Thats all I can say about him. He has been playing out of position so maybe he would be able to concentrate on hitting instead of his fielding. I have been that before.
That signing immediately bought the Red Sox a World Championship. DH was a major weakness the year before. Well worth the investment.
