2022 Reverse Proof Palladium Eagle no longer scheduled for September

The palladium eagle is one I definitely have to scrape the bank account to get the scratch for. I just noticed it WAS scheduled for early September, but is now TBD. Anybody with any inside info know when this will happen or are they cancelling it this year?

The status of TBD just means they could schedule it for next week or in December.
I actually hope they do cancel the reverse proof version this year - they've done that, got one.

Good catch. I just looked at this 2 days ago and it was scheduled for a specific date in September. Something is happening because the previous year’s palladium coins have been unavailable now for several weeks. And this years coin is gonna be the lowest mintage of all at 7,500. This may become a key.

Is the 7,500 PL one of the lowest? I see the 2019 was 30k.

These are close, but not double checked. The high price for 2021 was a major factor in lower sales.

    Year/Description Mintage
    2017 Mint State (bullion) 15,000
    2018-W Proof 14,986
    2019-W Reverse Proof 18,772
    2020-W Uncirculated 9,740
    2021-W Proof 5,169
    2021 Mint State (bullion) 8,700

Should be priced around the $2,850 range this time if palladium is $2150-2199 range, unless I read the fine print wrong.

There were TWO Palladiums minted in 2021? I only saw the proof offered for sale.

You may be right (hope you are). I was going by what the other older coins are listed at on their site ($3050 currently). There may be a lag in updating those (unavailable coin) prices tho.

There is no lag in the price on the mints website. It still fluctuates every week as normal ($3050 is correct at this moment). I follow these coins fairly close, and I’m curious to know why they’ve been unavailable for several months now? I’m wondering if the mint is melting these older years to be able to strike the new 2022 coins?

Yes, my estimate above is wrong. I was using the Mint 2021 pricing grid. **The 2022 pricing grid would indicate $3,000-3,100 **depending on palladium London weekly price average next week which is quite variable but spot dropping some today.

I am so thankful I already have a reverse reverse proof version.
How many of you believe the stated mintage will have an impact on premium above the already 42% Mint premium?

Me too. I think the stated mintage will have a little affect on sales, but the price tag will really slow it down. I got the first four different finishes, but stopped when they started to repeat the cycle and when the price tag jumped.

It makes sense that this year’s RP will be about a third of the mintage and even less in graded 70’s, so we may see some difference in price as compared to the 2019 RP graded 70’s. Of course, your purchase three years ago raw or graded has you in a +$1000 position. I have purchased three Pd eagles but no RP, so I am watching closely and would rather buy a graded 70 after the hysteria and hopefully the Pd spot settles a bit. I did that with the 2020 burnished and was able to get a SP70 FDI for about $450 less than the release day price. It will be fun to watch the action over the next week leading up to release. 🤓

I made the comment in another thread that I think the mint destroyed some collector incentive when they started repeating finishes. The above comment by Onastone supports this idea.

Palladium down $100 today. Kitco bid price dropped below $2,000 briefly. A sellout with a +/- $3,000 Mint price remains questionable.

Coin World PR: "Bulk purchase dealers may purchase majority of palladium coins"

By Paul Gilkes , Coin World

    Published: Sep 23, 2022, 5 PM

More than half of the mintage of the limited-edition Reverse Proof 2022-W American Eagle palladium $25 coin is scheduled by the U.S. Mint to be offered to the dealers in the Authorized Bulk Purchase Program.

The 1-ounce .9995 fine palladium coin was scheduled to go on sale to the public Sept. 29 in a maximum release of 7,500 coins.

Ordering limits are initially set at 10 coins per household, subject to modification.

Retail pricing was not yet announced as of Sept. 20 and is expected closer to the sale date. The closing price on the New York metals market Sept. 19 for palladium was $2,160 per troy ounce.

Based on the U.S. Mint’s pricing grid for coins containing precious metals, the Reverse Proof is likely to be priced near $3,100 per coin.

According to U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White Sept. 14, “For some products allocated to the ABPP program, we rely on historical offtake to define the amount of product allowed to this program. This is, for high value metals such as gold, platinum and palladium, higher than 10 percent. These products are typically purchased in quantity through our wholesale channels, of which ABPP is a significant part. The method for determining these allocations changes from year to year, as we continually review recent historical offtake. This year’s palladium is allocated to the ABPP at a level of slightly over 50 percent.

“At all times, there remains sufficient inventory for purchase by our Direct to Consumer (DTC) channels. Any inventory that remains after the ABPP orders have been fulfilled return to sellable through our DTC website.”

The ABPP dealers are able to place orders at premiums above regular retail for each coin before the public release and must pick up the coins they order at the Mint’s order fulfillment contractor PSFWeb in Memphis, Tennessee.

The $3,050.00 price was set last week. Once the previous week's price is set, it makes it a little harder to change that price either up or down the following week. That is why the $3,050.00 price is important...

The United States Mint number for Today has already been determined.
It will either be $3,000.00 or $3,050.00.
What happens in the United States palladium market today is irrelevant
Palladium market was actually weaker this morning before the Bank of England announcement and looking at the chart makes it a close call between the weakness ($3,000.00) and when the strength occurred ($3,050.00)...

The really sad thing about these is the additional dealer markups are so high if you try to collect 70's. This may be the last time... or did I say that last year? It only costs about $100 to grade one.
