Could this 71 Munson get a .5 bump?

Appreciate feedback pro/con. The flaw in this otherwise very solid 8 is the smudge on top left corner. Back has no issues.

    I prefer a good scan, but it looks like it could be an 8.5.

    It certainly has a chance but having said that there are some things that I notice that may keep it as is. # 1 If you look at the interior white that connects with the black border you will see some bleeding of the black (look at the top area). I have an 8.5 Johnny Bench and looked at this area and saw no bleeding at all. Not sure how closely graders look at the bleeding issues on cards for this set but I noticed it. # 2 Chipping along the top and bottom border. I am thinking maybe if only one side showed the very light chipping you might have a chance at a .5 bump. # 3 The corners looking good for an 8 or 8.5.

    My thought process on .5 bumps are that 2 out 3 of the below need to be in PSA 9 territory.
    Centering (Yes), Corners (No) and Registration (Maybe). I think your chance for a bump are slim. 71 Topps baseball is incredibly difficult to get an 8.

    Good luck if you decide to go for the bump. It would certainly move that card into a different level of low pop if it got a bump.

    Grateful and value your tenured opinions a great deal. The registry comment is particularly helpful, but not sure how "todays" grader view it. The card's best qualities are the centering and the "thurman munson" registry.

    I guess it comes down to whether it's worth a ~$500 review.

    I just quickly looked over the last two PSA 9's that sold. Wow!! If those are 9's then you have an 8.5. They are older slabs and seriously doubt that they would get 9's today. BTW the bleeding of the black I mentioned earlier was also seen in the PSA 9's so it must be very common for this card. You have a great looking card for the grade for sure.

    It could bump, but unless selling I wouldn’t spend the money on a review. Your Munson is exactly the same card as an 8 and as an 8.5. I would put the grading fees to buying another card for my collection.

    It would be $600 to review (if you assume an 8.5). For that price you could have your same Munson and get this too! (well it recently sold for $649) instead of having just your '71 Munson.

    Why pay more for the card you already have?

    I was thinking the same. 1971s are a tough grade. And with the grading we've seen today, I am not sure how many 1971's would get PSA 8s.

    Gretzky,Ripken, and Sandberg collection. Still trying to complete 1975 Topps baseball set from when I was a kid.

    By PSA’s definition of “corner wear” for 1971s, any hint of white at a corner constitutes “wear.” So as nice as this card is, it has wear at three or possibly all four corners in their mind. It would be a 7, but got the 7.5 because of the perfect centering and nice eye appeal.

    I happen to think there should be a difference between actual corner wear and the loss of a microscopic corner flake (penalized only because of the black borders), but PSA does not agree.

    At one time I owned 4 different PSA 8 1971 Ted Simmons. I took the best looking 8, cracked it out, BOOM PSA 7.

    I never messed with 71's again.

    Since this card was graded during the half point era, subbing it as a review is unlikely to yield a bump in my opinion. If you're brave enough to crack it out, your chances might be better, although based upon the experience of @DavidPuddy (and probably many others) I certainly wouldn't recommend doing so. The chipping along the top and bottom edges may have kept it from getting an 8.5 in the first place.

    I have some success cracking.

    1964 rose from bvg 6.5 to psa 7
    1978 murray from bvg 8.5 to psa 9
    1980 henderson from bvg 8.5 to psa 9

    but i've had some losers too.

    1972 mays bvg 8.5 to psa 7 back to bvg 9
    1990 tiffany frank thomas bvg 9 to psa 8
    1985 tiffany clemens psa 9 to psa 8

    Doesn’t our experience tell us that if you crack and regrade it could get a 7 or 7.5 or 8 or 8.5 or 9 ?
    Not a world of consistency on this……..good luck whatever you do it is a beautiful card.

    Haha! I think you can ask for a min grade even for a review right? I would never crack it out.
