    I don't have the book, but sounds like royals to me.

    Certain Royals are in fact cobs, hand hammered from a slice off of a cob shaped bar of silver.

    Royals are somewhat like a Proof coin. There was greater care in creating the planchette and with the strike so they are typically nice and round with a great strike, opposed to the usual rough cob. And yes they are rare.
