How accurate is the SMR guide, really? Does anyone have an opinion of this? It seems rare that I find cards at or even near to the values listed for the guide....usually I find the cards are higher price even in the Sold history of Ebay.

    Its accurate for about a rolling 12-month average... I'd use the Auction Prices Realized tool to get a truer representation of what a card/pack sells for.

    It's not accurate at all. I do find it quite useful when looking up commons to find out if they are tough to grade/higher value. I would continue to use sold history on eBay for the actual value of cards.

    i instantly laugh every time someone makes an offer based off of smr. i usually counter back w "why don't you just pull out the '89 beckett guide".

    so to answer your question, it's a joke and instantly out of date.

    here's an easier answer: how many sellers list "priced at smr!" in their titles?

    I disagree with it being called a joke. For a free price guide it holds a tom of information. Is it accurate, not exactly but it gives you a good baseline to do further research.

    and a "good basis to do further research"? let's not reinvent the wheel here. let's just go straight to the round wheel. no need to research that a square shaped wheel is no good.

    Yes, it's a joke. If they would synch it with APR (and APR could accurately capture Best Offers) it wouldn't be. Why not just go straight to a source of actual recent sales data?

    I'm like blurry, except I don't laugh, t's an immediate block if anyone brings up SMR values in a pricing negotiation. There is no need to waste another second with that person.

    Perhaps it's useful for vintage Topps baseball or very popular sets, but nothing that I'm buying or selling.

    Again it's free and has pricing on cards over 100 years old. On some of the older cards you rarely see on Ebay, which it sounds like is all you use to price with. It really depends on what the OP collects.

    1954 Topps Ernie Banks PSA 8. SMR is $11,500. Two sales over the weekend netted $14,400 and $15,990. Now if I’m buying this card I am looking up SMR to guide and recent sales for a more current price. EBay also had a BO under $15,000. So the SMR gives a good starting point. Rarer cards that don’t have recent sales are more what the buyer is willing to spend. SMR will ballpark it for you.

    A definite NO is the answer
