Ebay taxes

I am back to buying & have, of course, noticed we are required to pay taxes on purchases made on ebay. I am wondering how all the rest of you are handling this. I do not have a resell license but I do occasionally sell on ebay. Otherwise I am mostly a collector. Any suggestions?

Yes, the tax monster has been popping me pretty good lately, and I think it stinks. Everytime I go to Ebay checkout, I just want to gag.

Try to buy during eBay bucks offer to "cancel" out the pain of this new sales tax; as a seller expect slightly lighter final prices.

I am from New York where we are the highest taxed state and we still have so many "fees" beyond that other states do not have makes me want to puke. The 8% will just go to more entitlements for socialism at its best.

I have cut down considerably on my buying. A lot !!!!!!
When I do it is usually one higher priced card vs many.
I have been sending the card to the PVCC vault. No tax. If it is from them they do not charge for shipping as well.
It makes for a good financial decision. The only thing is you don't have a card in hand.

Other than that you are toast.

BTW if you are close enough to another state that is tax free you can get a P O Box.

i signed up for a package forwarding service and dont pay sales tax. they hold the packages for you and can ship one or all together...its not good for cheap items but items over $250 it seems to work for since you pay them at least $20 to ups an item from them to you. here is the sign up link. it also might not be so great for heavy items like a TV or furniture.

Something I didnt realize until just now when I had a big sale is that the paypal fee is based on the purchase price PLUS the tax paid by the buyer.

Now I need to go check if eBay's 10% final value fee is the same way. Hopefully that is still just based on the sale price and not the sale price plus the tax collected.

Nick, ebay does not charge final value fees on taxes like PayPal thank goodness. I have heard that retailers pay credit card fees on tax collected in "the real world", but have not confirmed that is true (for what it is worth).

t costs money to accept a credit card.
The fee depends on whether card number is plugged in or card is swiped.
Also the % is based on how much business you do.

I have square. It has no minimum and no fees except to run a card through.

That is about 3% of purchase price.

also the same for a debit card as it also involves 2 banks. buyer/seller

I have cut down considerably on eBay purchases since they started collecting sales tax. At this point, I have a pretty nice collection so maybe this is a good thing.

The question is about whether these fees are applied to sales tax (for retailers), not about if there are fees for credit card use.

eBay covers collecting sales tax so the seller doesn’t have to worry about it (just income tax, yay). I sell on eBay and definitely don’t get any piece of those taxes.

The tax did what I couldn’t do myself, restrain my spending. I pretty much stopped buying high dollar graded singles on ebay. I already have a large collection and most of the cards I already want. The only time I buy is when the 10% off coupons show up. It’s not really a cost issue, I live near LA and the thought of sending more money to the incompetents running the city and state disgusts me.

The plus side is that I am using message boards and shows to pick up singles. Old school.

Facebook marketplace groups are HOT HOT HOT. Sellers are saving eBay fees (14%) + no sales tax (which buyers tend to subtract from their final bid) and in some cases even Paypal Fees (if Friend and Family--but not recommended)

So in theory, sellers SHOULD be (and in some cases are) willing to sell 20% less than an eBay BIN via Facebook Markeplace Groups

I never see very good vintage on FB. Stuff is usually low grade. Maybe I'm just in all of the wrong groups on there??

Ebay fees are 10%. PayPal adds 3%, which the seller pays regardless of eBay or FB as long as PayPal Goods is used.
