Ebay sales tax.

Hit South Carolina today. Would have been nice via ebay offers. Threw out 2 nice offers on the 29th, both accepted this morning only to be hit with additional $248 in taxes when trying to check out.
Certainly not the sellers fault. And no real gripe other than the fact that maybe offers made pre-tax deadline should be treated at such price point.

Congrats....it stinks. WA here and 10% since the beginning of the year. Kills 95% of all potential deals.
I agree. What really sucks is because my watchlist is always full so I end up placing bids on certain items. Not all out bids, as I manually snipe, but I do end up winning a decent chunk of them. Probably because everyone else was getting hit with taxes, so I was saving 7-10% off the rip, but this changes my entire strategy now. But I refuse to retract these bids on 30+ items that have previously been entered. Just looks wrong and again, certainly not the sellers fault.
I have also noticed that my sales are going to a pwcc vault or comc boxes more frequently.
Fun knowing my ebay bucks are getting ready to be used to pay taxes.
Guess it’s time to look into facebook marketplace and the instagram thing. “Never would I ever...!”
I'd like to see them do away with the eBay bucks thing and just offer occasional 10%, 15%, and 20% coupons. They've done these in the past, but I haven't seen any straight coupons in a while. The sales tax is killing me. I don't even use the bucks promos.

Tax is coming to me on 11/1/19. So sad.

Sales tax stinks but we were lucky to get away with not paying it for years. Card budget stays the same so just get a couple less items each year. Someday they will close the loophole at card shows and we will be paying it on everything. Bucks and coupons still save money vs buying on days without them. Maybe this will make the Buy/Sell/Trade Board here more active.
Here’s a legitimate question for those who have been paying sales tax in conjunction with ebay bucks and promotions.
Do I get the 10% bucks on the pre or post tax dollar figure?
Bucks are on the pre-tax amount.

So it seems ebay has turned into just about every other auction house with a 7-10% buyers premium tacked on.
Internet Tax sucks. It definitely cut down on my purchases since it hit N.Y. months ago.
No. Every other auction house will also require sales tax sooner rather than later.
So yes for now is what you are actually saying?
Certainly gets priced in to any bid. I'm in Seattle - 10.1% and it appears shipping is taxed too!
I guess all yall will be moving to oregon
Yes, shipping fees are also taxed.
anyone with a chase freedom credit card, starting today until December 31st, 5 percent cash back on paypal purchases, up to a max of 1,500, that's 75 dollars to offset some tax. activate before using
Lucky in NH, NO Sales Tax
Business opportunity for you... eBay taxes based on shipping location. I’m in RI and floated the idea of shipping my more expensive purchases to family in MA before their tax kicked in on Oct 1. We could all ship our stuff to you and you could redistribute it for a small fee
Jim
Nothing in Illinois yet- I live across the River in Iowa so I have my stuff shipped to wife's office in Illinois...for now until IL starts taxing.
PC Walter Payton - Bear Down!
Which is amazing as IL taxes everything to the hilt then the money gets wasted, somehow.
I may have to join Facebook to get in the buy sell boards. I’ll use eBay for best offer and low dollar auctions. The prime stuff is going elsewhere, the buyers for those items want me to subsidize the tax.
Get a po or like mail box in delware. Solves your tax problems.
An open forum discussion on tax evasion...gotta love it.

have some bad news, Illinois will be getting taxed on e bay starting January 1st. 2020. you have 3 tax free months left anyway

I just stopped using ebay all together. To much hassle dealing with the taxes now. I just use the forums here, on net54, and on blowout for the most part. I just started using a few facebook BST pages.

I'm debating on whether or not if I am going to sell my card collection. I have no interest in giving the crooked gov more of my money. I have no interest in adding to my collection, and selling is less fun when less people are interested in buying(because of the new taxes). The old great days of ebay are long gone.
IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED
Is it legal to tax the shipping fees? I thought that services weren't taxed.
Shipping fees should not be taxed

This thread had me wondering about my ebay fees, so I was finally able to view EVERYTHING I'm being charged for, which took more digging that it should have.
I subscribe to the Basic Store since ebay no longer gives you the amount of free listings that they used to. The yearly fee for a Basic Store is $21.95 per month. Well I just discovered that I'm ALSO being charged $19.00 per month for something called a Terapeak Subscription. WTF is that?? After doing a little more digging, I see that this stupid Terapeak is supposed to be FREE for Basic Store subscribers. So why am I being charged an extra $19.00 per month on top of my subscription?
Are any of you being charged for this? I was wondering why my fees have been a little higher than usual lately.
1) Multiple people involved
2) Using the internet, phone, or other means of communication
3) Openly conspiring
4) To enlist the USPS
5) To ship items across state lines
6) Using an unincorporated entity that pays no licensing fees, no income tax, no payroll tax, etc
7) In order to deny or defraud states from collecting sales tax.
I'm fairly certain there are at least some obscure laws being broken.
I know that taxes are unpopular. And the likelihood of the tax man ever coming after you are very minute, as the cost to prosecute and recover the shortfall would likely vastly exceed the amount recovered. It's just very, very stupid to talk about how to circumvent taxes in an open forum. This goes for the income tax thread, also. Death and taxes, folks. Death and taxes...
I have a basic store as well but I have never looked. I pay my monthly fees really without looking. I did think that there was supposed to be some cap on selling fees but I know that my bill has been more than that a couple of months. Where did you find this charge and I'll take a look?
@jeffcbay I think Terapeak is a site similar to Worthpoint to look up past ebay sales. I wouldn't be surprised if that was one of ebay's slimy little ways to get people for more money: Check this box if you don't want to use Terapeak. That site has a knack for always checking/unchecking listing options when I go to list. I'll purposelly not include Best Offer and my listing ends up with a BO option then I'll choose Requires Immediate payment on my BIN's and ebay will just ignore that one.
If you weren't using that Terapeak subscription then I'd recommend getting your money back for however months you paid for it.

I've had them sneak in the $2 bold title listing here as of late. I really gotta keep my head on a swivel.

Kiss me twice.....let's party.
This thread scares me. Taxes are like evil Leprechauns. Where's me gold! I want me gold!
Some of Jennifer Aniston’s best work.
I agree, Friends is garbage compared to ticking off a 3 foot tall angry Leprechaun. I think we all know what happens when you screw with a Leprechaun's gold. Hey Rachel, Ross can't save you now.
@jeffcbay,
Sep 30 Store (Basic): Subscription Fee (Oct 1 - Oct 31) $27.95
Sep 30 Terapeak: Subscription Fee Savings of -$19.00 included (from Oct 1 - Oct 31) $0.00
It should be free.
Thanks,

I don't know. It is probably worth looking into, but I am being taxed on all final purchase price AND shipping charges. Maybe if this is not legal, there is a large class action lawsuit in the making...
Found the answer to my question about taxing shipping fees.
That's pretty amazing, especially considering I have been shipping goods out of FL for a decade and never once have they been subject to tax.
Now if you "hide" shipping charges in the cost of the price of the product it's a different story. But stand alone shipping charges? No man.

I live in Florida and recently bought a card from a seller in Florida. I got hit with sales tax but I think if you live outside Florida then you need to question it if you get hit with sales tax and you bought from a Florida seller.
after the sd vs wayfair ruling, federal trumps state law on collecting. prior, in state purchases and sales should have been collected or reported depending on which side of the transaction you were on.
Adjust your bids accordingly to account for the sales tax being charged, although that will put you at a disadvantage when bidding against buyers in non-sales tax states.
With the new Sales Tax in effect...does anybody know PayPal will still release our sales to IRS if we sell over 20k / 200 Transactions?
What does sales tax have to do with income tax?
Not following. Ebay should reduce fees due to the introduction of a state law about collecting taxes? How about deal with your state's elected lawmakers to solve yout problem. Or, As I have said before here, get a mailbox in delware. Tax problem solved.
I bought a $100 card the other day and paid $8 in taxes. My eBay bucks were $10 and change. So it pretty much went all to taxes. I like the idea of the 20%-30% off coupons.
