I Bought an 1804 Large Cent for $72 - Question Added

From an eBay seller who had it listed as an 1804. I was skeptical at first but I've since convinced myself that the attribution was actually correct. The berry configuration seems right. Feel free to convince me of my error...

Anyway, whilst this particular coin clearly violates my "readily attributable" rule, it does comply with my "under $200, if possible" rule. For an 1804, I was going to have to give one way or the other...

The reverse is very compelling. I can't make out anything on the obverse.

I must have great eyes-- I can see the full Liberty bust, the ribbon in the hair and all four digits of "1804" (albeit very light)

I can see those details, as well but I'm afraid my vision is somewhat augmented by my imagination!

Setting aside whether it would make economic sense, what are the chances of getting this coin into a PCGS holder with an 1804 date on it? Do you suppose it would be useful to provide a link to @Ikeigwin 's awesome overlay? Thanks.

The counterstamp is interesting and has obviously been on the coin for a very long time. I'd try to find out more about the counterstamp before sending it to be graded/authenticated.

In looking at examples in my collection and online the berry configuration with the letter E in ONE and the second berry is in the same position as an 1803 which had a mintage of over 3 million coins whereas the 1804 had a reported mintage of 96,000. As far as the date being legible I can see nothing, so the reverse is what I have been trying to compare. One other diagnostic is to check the alignment of the 0 in the date (which may be visible to you) and the O in the OF on the reverse, they should be aligned on a genuine 1804. Fingers crossed that the alignment is there!

At this point I would have to send it in for authentication. Getting a "Poor Details" holder is all that's needed to celebrate your find.

That’s exactly what I’d be shooting for but I have no feel for how hard the grader may work the problem. They could, for example, think, “This will be fun. Let’s see if we can confirm the date.” On the other hand, the thought process might be, “There’s no way I can confirm the date in the time I’m allotted; into the body bag you go...”
