dave was a great athlete.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
And as far as I know, a really great guy off the field.
Luke Wittee!!!!!!!!!
I know that story. That is the only blemish on his resume that I know of. Every story I have heard about him as a pro or retired makes him out as a great guy.
Edit to add: I know that that fight was a bad thing and I am not here to defend the guy. I only made that comment because I had heard about so many great fan interactions with him over the years.
I got a chance to meet dave a couple of years ago. He was a nice guy and generous with his time
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
UCLA football great Kenny Easily got drafted into the NBA... but it was the 10th round. Lol. Why on earth did they have so many rounds back in the day!? Looks like Winfield got drafted in the 5th round of the NBA draft.
Witte tells a story about about his kid reading Winfield's autobiography and deciding that Winfield was now his hero. He said something to his dad about it and Luke says "You can like who you want to like but let me tell you about Dave Winfield..."
Would be easy to overlook or forgive Winfield for that fight but he has never apologized for it and he downplayed/lied about it in his book.
Reggie Jackson ... two fruits from totally different trees. I'd argue...Winfied was better on the field and in the dugout.
Jackson might have had a SLIGHT edge as a hitter. In every other aspect of the game Winfield OBLITERATES Reggie.
I was a kid when the fight happened. Seems to me Winfield was not one of the central figures. I still remember (I think) Ron Behagen and Corky Taylor were the main guys for the Gophers.
No excuse for kicking Witte in the seeds, even if he was being a jerk. Sounded like a VERY VERY angry/dirty game that perhaps should have been managed better by the referees and coaches.
If I remember right, Winfield came off the bench and sucker-punched somebody, then jumped on top and went to town.
