How many fakes can you spot?

Whoever wins this is going to be mighty upset. Hopefully everything else besides the key dates will be real.

Also, there is a possibility that some of these products were reported lost or missing by the original owner; however there will be no refunds or exchanges given for these "recovered items." While every effort has been made to dispose of brand-name counterfeits there is no claim to the authenticity or value of any item. If the successful buyer has reason to believe the item is counterfeit, he or she must notify someone at the facility prior to leaving the premises. The item in question will be immediately destroyed with no further investigation into the authenticity, and no adjustment will be made to the amount paid for the lot.

    Wow that's crazy....

Wow. What a mess. Some of the slabs are obvious fakes, especially the CC Morgans. Despite that, the majority of the stuff is probably legit. Mostly lower-value type stuff with a bunch of bullion thrown in. Valuing and disposing of this will take some effort.

There must be a sad story behind this.

well, the first image I looked at is fake.

the bar code is different, and the coin looks dramatically different.
    actual: https://coins.ha.com/itm/morgan-dollars/1893-s-1-vf30-pcgs/a/1204-4926.s?hdnJumpToLot=1&x=0&y=0
    fake: https://www.govdeals.com/photos/4703/4703_33975_149.jpg

second photo also appears fake, but the photo is very poor.
    fake: https://www.govdeals.com/photos/4703/4703_33975_154.jpg
    real: https://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/26166841_max.jpg

third photo, again, bar code is wrong.
    fake: https://www.govdeals.com/photos/4703/4703_33975_45.jpg
    real: https://coins.ha.com/itm/morgan-dollars/1889-cc-1-xf45-pcgs/a/1160-4213.s?hdnJumpToLot=1&x=0&y=0

    So, yeah. 0/3

apart from verifying through checking auction records or trueviews, many of the coins are plainly counterfeit.

I would be willing to wager $10 that even though they said "While every effort has been made to dispose of brand-name counterfeits there is no claim to the authenticity or value of any item" that they actually didnt even consult a single numismatic professional.

agreed. not ALL of the coins are bad enough to tell with the crappy photos. however, the bar codes are clearly wrong as well on those ones. I would have to assume that any non-bullion coin in this lot is fake. I also wouldnt be surprised if some/a lot of the bullion is also fake.

what will happen is someone will buy it. they will post them on ebay, and people will buy them. whoever gets this lot will undoubtedly make a lot of profit. :(

I wrote the auctioneer and told them to get a coin shop down there to inspect and verify. If sold as such they will likely be facing a huge lawsuit. What if the SS shows up at their door?

Those are actually just copper rounds, I believe. Not even meant to fool anyone. Some in the lot for sure are though.

Yep terrible double eagle fakes. Scary that much of this is sitting in display cases like they were all confiscated from a coin or pawn shop. Wonder how many were sold before the seize?

One would to either ignorant or mentally challenged to place that bid. In addition to the counterfeits, some of the photos are too blurry to see what’s there.

Now !! Do you think our host will contact the company and suspend the auctions with the fake coins and fake slabs? You have the best grading company in the world watching their slabs (fake) but people do not realize that fake slabs exist. Many bids are being placed based on the PCGS grading service. I see nothing but trouble for PCGS if they sit on their hands and NOT DEMAND THE REMOVAL OF THE SLABS WITH FAKE COINS can only hurt the reputation of our host.

Has anyone contacted them to let them know about all the fakes. If it is a government based auction I would think a few simple phone calls to the right agency may end this quickly!
