What is this?

Sorry about the lousy photos. Never seen one and know little about foreign coins. Dated 1830 I think. Help welcome.

Brazil coin, Peter I (the first King of independent Brazil, after it split from Portugal).

There were a bunch of coppers that were overstamped with higher values. I believe the values were usually doubled from the original coin.

The book I need to pull out is at the bottom of a big stack of books.

Brasil, 40 Reis. It should have a mintmatk of R, B, C, or G. None are any great rarity and looks like it has been buried for a long time or an extreme oxidizing environment. It's not a regular originally minted item. It is from ICO and has that Regional countermark (re-evaluation). Krause said that they are curiosities only.

Thanks. It is a bit larger than a silver dollar, but in rough shape. My father had it with his other old coins.

These coins typically come in rough condition. They were small change, copper coins used in a humid environment.

I have an 1828R 80 Reis, revalued to 40 Reis, with a similar counterstamp (your host coin is in much better condition than mine). From what I recall, each Brazilian state originally had a separate valuation for the real. These countermarks were applied c. 1835 to convert the old coinage to a unified federal value for all Brazil.
