Question for the wrestling collectors.

Just wanted to know your opinion on whether if wrestling is considered a sport.
My idea of a sport is a contest between two teams or individuals, that play by a set of rules, with the goal of winning the contest, and it can not be predetermined who is going to win.
Therefore I do not see wrestling as a sport. I see it more like a form of entertainment.
But I would be interested to hear from the people who do consider it a sport. Your opinion would
be valued, and I would not argue against it. Actually won't post again. Would just like to hear from the other side.

Is this a question because you don’t think we should be able to post about it on this forum or a legit question?
I'll assume this is a legit question.
I think all wrestlers are athletes. I think Olympic-style wrestling is a sport, WWE is not (as the current name implies), but is fine to post in a sports card forum. I also think there should be a distinction on always predetermined winner (e.g. WWE) and occasional instances of predetermined winner (e.g. Black Sox).
Are you planning on being at the N Korea Summit? If not you should after defusing that one.

Just thinking more from a 'what could be shown on a sport channel?' definition, than what fits the OPs requirements. WWE fits the bill better than some actual 'sports' that would get next to zero views. I think that is more the intent of a SC&M forum than showing off cards of curlers/sweepers. I'd personally much rather see cards of poker players here and have the debate of whether that's a sport or not. Heck, chess is a sport by the OPs definition.
While wrestling is more on the side of entertainment rather than a sporting event there is no denying that these wrestlers are athletes, many of which I’d consider incredibly talented. There are many things people consider a sport that don’t necessarily require peak athleticism to compete. ESPN airs tons of stuff that I consider activities rather than sports. Bowling, darts, billiards and cornhole come to mind. These are every day activities that require no athletic skill whatsoever. Sure, they require skill such as hand eye coordination but these people are simply participants and not athletes, yet ESPN calls these sports. Great question with no real answer but in my book Sports are played by athletes therefore wrestling is a sport.
When discussing the content that ESPN chooses to broadcast, it's always important to remember what the letters in its name stand for - and which letter comes first.
It requires a lot of athletic ability to throw and slam each other without causing injury. I agree with jtala 18, I would consider it entertainment by finely tuned athletes.

Wrestling is a work and therefore entertainment. One could argue there have been matches that were actually sport but in the aggregate a planned finish removes true competition.
I would think that if the moderators had an issue with wrestling posts in a sports card forum they'd address that. Given that they haven't (as far as i can see), I think that's the bottom line and it's a non-issue.

There have been numerous complaints over the years on the board. I don’t recall if the OP was one of the people complaining but the topic is odd in my view. If the promoters tell you it is entertainment it seems like there isn’t anything to discuss.
When wrestling cards were moved to non sport three or four years ago the complaints started again.
What's the point of the original question? There's clearly an inference; quit beating around the bush and state your point.

I think the real question is when wrestling went from sport to entertainment......
Looking to BUY n332 1889 SF Hess cards and high grade cards from 19th century especially. "Once you have wrestled everything else in life is easy" Dan Gable
Wrestling is Sports Entertainment. So get both!! Really though is wrestling at this point much different than say the NBA with the Warriors?
Agreed, and the general tabloidization of professional sports makes it on par with WWE in terms of drama in 2018.
To the original question- no, it is not a sport, but I do think it should be allowed in these forums. It's an athletic performance albeit not a true athletic competition.

I believe Dave Meltzer stated some time around the1920s when the Gold Dust Trio of promoters began running more carny circuits and 'encouraged' their wrestlers to participate in worked finishes. It probably happened earlier than that as well, I think shoot matches were just going so long at the time that it was losing the audience's attention. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

If this sub forum was extremely busy, I’d say move it to non sports or open a pro wrestling sub forum. As it is, this sub forum can handle it and I have no problem with wrestling posts being here.
