I posted a link to that auction in the "Jennifer, bubblebathgirl, and now Vickey" thread.
Coincidence that this 52 rack seller and Vickey are both in Hartford,Conn?

That Mantle is as fake as the day is long (for lack of a better analogy).

Wow! Why would somebody spend that much money without doing their homework or making sure it's a reputable dealer?

This is the same dealer that is selling Atlas graded 1986 Fleer basketball packs for $350 to $400. According to past sales they sold the Mantle rack once for $20,000. In the listing posted here it sold for $15,200.

Mark Murphy was one of the first to sell these Christmas packs back in 2001 or so. He advertised them in SCD. Said he bought them from someone who said they were returned or overstocked Topps cards repackaged by a 3d party and sold in retails stores at Christmas time. I think his original "find" involved packs from 53 to 63' but later 52 and subsequent years showed up ( plus even later, other sports)

It has been said by various sources the "original" repackaged items were put together as early as the 60s or as late as the 90s, and all years in between. Seems obvious, whatever the original source, someone is still churning them out today.

I find them interesting from a hobby lore standpoint. No one, including Murphy , has been willing or able to offer any real info on when they were first packaged, by what "3d party", or in which retail stores they were supposedly sold.

Some archeologist minded folks claim to be able to tell the difference between the packs uncovered by Murphy from later productions by examining staples and the alignment and configuration of the packaging and such. The folks that claim this usually are trying to sell what they say are the "real deal".

If I was not retired with too much time on my hands when not traveling I would try to put together a article delving into these things :-)

Murphy's xmas racks may have been packaged years ago vs the ones still being packaged today, but no unopened collector will touch them either way as the cards are EX-MT at best (in many cases, even lower grade) and almost certainly cherrypicked. When first sold, however, they were not marketed that way and people spent a ton of money on them.

I get that part, but if the original packaging took place in the 60s or even 70s ( not at all a sure bet), and was done by a third party ( never identified), and sold at retail ( by a retailer(s) never identified), then such packs might have middle cards less cherry picked than ones packaged in the 80s , 90s and last week.

Agreed in evaluating packs on eBay any value would be the value of the 6 cards showing, less whatever might be on the unseen fronts or backs of those 6 cards. Not a good gamble at all.

But for curiosity sake I would like to know if the packs Murphy "found" were put together in the 60s and 70s and really ever sold at retail , and whether there is in fact a verifiable way to tell those packs from later produced packs. ( maybe it is like telling the difference between a 1970 and 1971 Topps Super pack :-) )There are threads about this all the time and everyone agrees a well versed collector avoids them, but Is there a verifiable story about the "originals" and if so what is it ? I guess It will remain a hobby mystery.

Did anyone here themselves encounter such Christmas packs in a retail store or know someone who says they did , and if so in what period of time ? I have been collecting since 1957 and the first I heard of these was in 2001 via Murphy.

That statement is very telling, imo...my guess, fwiw, is that none were packaged too long before 2001. I strongly doubt that these could have been packaged in the 1960s or 1970s and not been seen till 2001.

    Hope so.

I tend to agree with this. If so, there may be no back story to tell. The fact Murphy would not say who sold them to him, or who the 3d party packager was, or where they were retailed, certainly lends to your guess being as good as any.

The problem is that I suspect anyone coming forward now with any kind of confirmation regarding the lore behind these packs is probably in on it somehow, no matter what they say.

I'm not saying they were part of the creation of these cardboard Dutch ovens. It may be a case that they purchased a few in the past and are trying to course-correct the legitimacy of these so that they can unload them down the line. I've heard from (and in just about every case, more importantly, not heard from) everyone in the hobby that I would trust to provide valid confirmation regarding these packs by this point in time. Who could possibly step forward at this point offering a conclusive story on these that we would accept as truth?

To the guy that rolled the dice with the $5,800 offer?

Rumor has it that this is the only authentic 1952 Christmas Rack Pack known to exist. All the others are fake.

I think the card in the middle of that authentic pack is one of those rare Canadian gray backs

The card isn't rare. There are plenty of legit ones for sale on ebay.

either the winner didn't go thru with the purchase or this seller is trying to press his luck twice. He's got the same exact card listed right now in an auction.

I'm surprised he didn't add the usual "this came from an estate sale" or "these were found in a sports locker." Its pretty sad how many people actually believe this crap by now.

There's a guy on ebay that does the whole "sports locker" gimmick that likes to sell basketball card lots of superstars from the 86-88 Fleer years where he slips in Jordan rookie reprints with a bunch of other early Fleer cards. Earlier this year he bought some 2nd & 3rd yr cards of MJ from me and days after getting them in the mail,he put them on ebay with reprints of MJ's two 86 cards saying they were locker finds. I know he used my exact cards and when i asked him about it,he ended up blocking me. In his auctions he would say he didn't know anything about cards and that these may be reprints then would repeatedly get $500+ for cards that normally would have sold for under $100.
