What do you do in a case like this?

Just got this card back. Just went over it with a 10x loupe, and there are no pinholes that would make it a 1 so WHAT THE HECK?

Has anyone ever appealed to PSA and gotten any satisfaction? Just makes no sense to me. What am I missing?

  • Based upon PSA's descriptions and exhibits, that should have graded no lower than a 2. Again, complete lack of consistency has become their reputation. This one is kind of "suspicious" because there's no way that qualifies as a 1. Its got near perfect centering, rounded corners and several creases. Should be a 2 or 3 imo.

Could it have graded a 1 because of potential paper loss on one of the corners?

right. so, what the heck do i do? suck it up and eat 10 bucks or will they ever admit errors?

You paid them for 1)their opinion and 2)the encapsulation. They don't "owe" you anything and don't have to "admit" anything. Its their opinion, nothing more/less.

Did you request no qualifiers? If you did then maybe that is why. Might have been a PSA 2 (ST) and if you requested no qualifiers then they could drop the grade.

I think this is most likely.

I'm going to say that this is a 1.5 at best. Probably not worth making a fuss.

Looks better than a 1, but card does have several problems; creases, staining and missing (?) paper on corners.

PSA will not admit to making a mistake here. What was said earlier is correct, you are asking them for an opinion and apparently 2 graders, or 1 "senior" grader, thought it deserved a "1". I tried to look under the grading guidelines to see if a ST would lower a 2 to a 1 but couldn't find the information. I think cards 4(?) or below do not get the grade lowered by a qualifier.

I could go on and on about cards being returned as "miscut" and being resubmitted and coming back a "7", "PD"s where none existed etc. Your only recourse is to send in for a review or crack and resubmit.

    Card displays very well.

Card could grade as high as a 2. I'm thinking the corners could be looked at as paper loss.

Much like the pin hole - perhaps "paper loss" in any amount condemns the card to a 1?

I've never been great at grading.

    Mike,

That is what I thought the problem may be, that the crack is paper loss.

Paper loss does not always make it PSA 1. I have seen many examples with paper loss that graded higher than a PSA 1. That is certainly a very nice looking PSA 1. Also I wonder what the back of the card looks like? That might also help explain the grade. I would proudly add that card to my rookie collection.

Mike - I believe "paper loss" will result in the card grading no higher than a "2".

  • Out of curiosity what does the back of the card look like?

Looks like paper loss above the bottom left corner.

I noticed the paper loss at his collar right off the bat. But overall it does present well.

my 49 Satchel Paige had a pinhole and could barely see it but it was there.I really do not see any evidence of a pinhole on your Campy of the same year.2 or 3 for sure.
