  • It's too bad that somewhere, anywhere on the West Coast wasn't considered once again. I know the old arguments about some of these locations being difficult to book in advance and/or that the on-site labor unions are a pain to deal with but things do change over the years.

Los Angeles (downtown LA and not Anaheim) is in the mist of a huge revitalization and at least twenty high occupancy hotels have opened recently or will by 2020 in the vicinity of their convention center. The region has a huge collecting base and hosted past nationals.
San Diego, home of Comic-Con International, and Las Vegas go without saying are capable of putting on successful conventions.
San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and Phoenix all seem like markets worth considering as well.

Likewise, Dallas and Houston have thriving sports bases, plenty of venues, and centralized locations...plus they host large annual shows already.

I am a former SoCal resident and I understand the disappointment. Dealers have a huge voice in location. San Diego's
Comic-Con blows the National Sports Collectors Convention away in attendance. According to the LA Daily News, Comic-Con 2015 was attended by 167,000 people. I have not seen any numbers for 2017.

Guess that will be my 3rd national. The only other 2 I went to was the last 2 times it was in ac. I loved it last year.

I don't get to make it to many Nationals(3 so far) but why do they basically go to 2-3 cities? Chicago, Cleveland, AC?

I'd like Baltimore again. 1 hour drive was quite nice.

    Don't forget Baltimore!

    The answer is... Dealers!!!

Predominantly, Midwest and East Coast located. The west coast might be great for sportscards as well, but besides the west "coast", that's a huge stretch of the country between there and the Mississippi where dealers are sparse... compared to the Midwest and Southeast and East Coast.

Collectors can travel to the show by air, car, train... but dealers, that's mostly a driving venture!

I am from the East coast, but would like to visit cities other than Cleveland and Chicago every other year...no offense to those cities as I do enjoy visiting them. A show in Texas or someplace in California would be awesome. Out of all the locations, I think Baltimore was my favorite. Lots of stuff to do within walking distance of that convention center.

Tim, you have 3 years to plan for AC...make it happen!!

And miles to go before I sleep,

    Collecting:
Any unopened Baseball cello and rack packs and boxes from the 1970's and early 1980s.
  • I vote for Orlando, even Tampa. It takes way too long to get out of Florida to go anywhere else.

I would love to see the National spread around all over the country. As far as other East Coast locales, I would love to see it come back to Atlanta.

I vote for Dodge City, KS.
Instead of meeting for dinner we meet for a game of poker at
    Boot hill casino.
You can fly into Denver and from there you can rent a horse to get to Dodge.

I think waiting 365 days is good and bad, and I would like to see them consider doing one in Orlando or Tampa in March - call it the Spring Training National. Warm weather spot where people up north would like to get away, dealers with families would love to take them to Florida for a vacation and kill two birds with one stone, attendees could see a spring training game or make an event for attendees around several games.... Orlando has a huge convention center, and make it a Thurs-Sunday event with a Friday night game. Plus lots of great signees would be in Florida from current players to retired players. Would love to see it happen.

KC...I like that idea! It has a nice ring to it Spring Training National...plus get away for some dealers/collectors to the cold north like myself.

I would much rather go to NYC instead of AC. Too bad the unions there prevent it from happening.

I'm in Texas and would more than happy to visit CA.

    Maybe in the future?

I believe the only reason they pick AC might be due to cost? Since if they're willing to go all the way over to the "right" coast why not the left?

    Hiya Keith

If they want it in FLA? I'm perfectly happy.

I'm guessing from a buying and selling perspective? Not a good deal.

My understanding is that they didn't care much for Houston when it went there?

I like anywhere that is close to a ball park so I can catch a game while I'm there. I do agree the same old 3 places gets a bit stale. I'd like to see a St Louis or Kansas City show, Texas, Cali, and a few others mixed in for sure.

Unless things drastically change people had better get used to the current rotation of a few cities. Before he passed away Mike Berkus stated that most of the large convention centers do not want consumer shows such as the National and convention centers that were receptive wished to be able to cancel out a year to 18 months in advance if hotels were not being booked at an acceptable level or if another option of renting out the convention center to another show that would mean more money for them presents itself.

They may have another National in California but if they do it will be a large west regional show. The vast majority of dealers in the midwest to east coast who have a van full of inventory will opt out that year (as in 2006) as they do not and will not drive 30 to 45 hours each way to the show. I know I won't. Dealers who fly will attend and dealers who ship or have inventory trucked to the west coast and willing to drive cross country will still setup.

If promoting a National show or an addtional spring National show in Florida or Arizona is easy to pull off why don't this board pool it's resources and do it and make all of the money and show the NSCC board how it is done?

I'm gonna be in the minority here but I don't really care about the vendors other than - at times - seeing something I will never afford.

I go for the friends I've made - what a great bunch of guys!

The net has brought people together.

    Two examples:

I talked with Bishop for over 2 yrs and didn't realize he lives a little over a mile from my house.

I talked with Mantlefan (no longer posts here) for years and found out that we were raised 5 blocks from each other and went to the same Catholic church - in fact, he was an alter boy, so I "definitely" saw him tho we didn't know each other until now.

    Last.

I'm "not" saying we don't need these vendors. All I'm saying is that it's secondary (for me) to the relationships that I've acquired over the many years here.

the biggest problem with AC; it's not a family destinatin. NY would be a no brainer for us here in CA. Would bring the whole family. My wife and daughters do not want to "hang-out" in AC. Sorry to the AC fans, but very poor selection by the committee IMO.

It was not as bad as people made it out to be, and I will be taking the family in 2020. Venue was nice, hotel was nice and close by, and drive from Philly was easy and a straight shot.
