Hey Canada collectors,
I'm thinking of starting a set of Vicky Quarters in XF45-AU, all original surfaces of course. I'm not going to try to get every variety, just a date set. Does anyone have any thoughts on the series? Am in nuts to try this ?

Thoughts? Yes, you are nuts...as well as ambitious and you had better be lucky, disciplined, patient and have the funds to buy the right coin when it appears as soon as you see it. I love these coins, but to get an original, meaty set is mighty difficult. From time-to-time I carry these on my site, but they get picked off (typically from members of this board) fairly quickly. I would heartily recommend going forward with your plan. Good luck and share images!

They're nice looking coins in EF+. Not an easy task to find nice, problem-free examples, but it's doable. A few key dates will be quite tough/pricey though.
I look for these and buy them when I can... Very very tough to find in the 45 to 58 range. I see this as a challenge as are the Edward VII quarters in the same grade range

Certainly quite a challenging task... Even some 'common' dates can be quite tough to find with nice original surfaces in those grades... The Canadian Victorian quarters and halves saw very extensive circulation!

perhaps you start off with a set of lower grades and complete it first. Then upgrade whenever you have the chance. But, as said and indicated above, if and when you find a better coin, do not hesitate to pull the trigger right then... because if you will "first think about it" it will usually be gone. If you find an 1875.. take it in any, even a G3 grade.
I recently got lucky. was able to purchase a complete set of Vicky quarters at, of all places, Feebay. they were not cheap and with an average of about VF 20, in great shape.All the key dates incl. some rare varieties were there.
Best was 1871 obv 1 in EF, very scarce in any grade, and a 1880 AV in F15.
In the very near future, I will clean up and sell or trade some of my spare Vicky quarters.

I guess everyone wants to see what the 1875 looks like..
Not graded yet and not so important to get graded. More important is to have one ( I have 2, second is better)
My personal goal is to hopefully and eventually find most, if not all 25 Cent Vicky varieties. I am about 80 % there.

Those are a great pair of 1875-H quarters.
YQQ, the green on my coin is from the toning. It is actually a nice, slightly dark yet colorful coin.

Am glad it is toning. I had deep down visions bout all sort of bad things attached to them.
But then I thought, the TPG would have listed it.

Here's a 1901 quarter in ICCS MS62 plastic that a local dealer is selling for $650 CDN

Actually a fair price to ask for.
However, I would not buy it sight unseen or a verification phone call to ICCS to confirm the coin..
I am aware of the difficulty to take images through the ICCS flips. ( tons of reflections etc)
What would be the purpose of that call? I've never dealt with ICCS before, so not sure of their services or information they keep about their certified coins.

Yes they do. but ONLY by phone. It is usually Scott ( Brian's Son who does the checking) most the time he calls you back , or if he has time keeps you on the phone for some time while he checks records.
Yes, an antiquated system. But it works for them as they seem to have tons of business.

Well, as the song goes "we've only just begun," and had my first date with Vicky tonight. I picked up the following from Heritage:
81H PCGS 45
83H PCGS 50
88 pCGS 50
Each at under $200 US per piece, so I'm quite happy!!
They had about 20 Vicky quarters in the auction, some looked "processed," some overgraded, and a couple maybe re-toned, but I think I got three solid pieces and am ready to roll with this !
I thought about you when these coins came up tonight. I was excited at first when I noticed a PCGS VF20 1875-H, but did not like the coin at all.

I see that Frank Shaskan is offering a complete set of Canada 25 cents on his latest list.
Edit - he is listing them individually with a few varieties.

Hello all:
I'm finally reviewing my items from Heritage. Here's my opinion:
81H. Lot no. 33139. Obviously "wiped" or lightly cleaned, but whoever did it had enough sense to stop and leave well enough alone. Heritage sure knows how to juice their photos ! It's still a good coin in my opinion, and am not complaining given what I paid. Still has good luster under the lettering.
83H and 88: lots 33141 and 33148:
Both 100% original and PQ, possibly undergraded.
