Do you think eBay should hire consultants to identify overgraded vintage?

And also overpriced vintage. Eliminate the clutter online.

I'd do it for eBay bucks.

why would they? If people click buy they make a percentage...if people keep listing they make listing fees. What is in it for them?

They should hire consultants to help them identify customer service reps who don't possess the reasoning skills of a cantaloupe.

Overgraded as in slabbed cards or raw cards where a seller states condition?

So I took a peak at some key Mickey Mantles and noticed the price on '51 Bowman and '52 topps have almost doubled since 2010-2012 timeframe. I'm talking what used to be sold for $5,000 now gets $10,000 and even higher if you look at the BIN's listed.

I'm torn because I sold off these cards in that timeframe and it crossed my mind to find another one in a higher grade. But the prices are ridiculous.

I know we came off a recession in 2008-2009, but can anyone explain the reason for these price hikes? Is it across the board and not just Mantle's trending higher...

Is it a new generation of vintage buyers bringing money into the market?

I need an explanation or my heads going to explode. It's been years since I've looked at this stuff so It's shocking.

Read Smitty's 87th thread in a month about can he get a PSA 5 on his Mantle. Seasoned vets said no. Came back a 5. Bad idea CC.

Would still be a personal and subjective process, really no different than If I go on eBay now and differentiate between what I believe to be overgraded or undergraded PSA cards. No net gain, not worth hiring someone to do it or anywhere near salary worthy. Much less worth mighty "ebay bucks". :D

Why would Ebay ever worry about "clutter"? It's not costing them a penny.

Additional subjective oversight does not seem like a valid idea.

Don't see any upside for ebay in this proposal. Their goal is to maximize listings and potential fees not to concern themselves with offering cards with nice eye appeal.

Should CU hire consultants to identify and eliminate Smitty clutter?

Ebay makes more money when an "overgraded" item sells.

I noticed the same thing, some players cards are really going up. I think the single most reason is that the quality vintage is just being scooped up. I have been buying for many years, but only PSA 5-7, nothing higher. I sure miscalculated the situation. I am searching for quality Mantle, Mays, Brock, Snider, etc cards. There are not very good samples to pick from, most seem to be off center and grades in 7 and higher are tough to find. While there are always new stock piles being listed, the large selection of Mantles are just spoken for. The other day, a search for PSA 7 Mantles turned up just a handful and they seem to all have some issue. I picked up a nice Mantle 6, perfectly centered, but when it arrived, there was a small printing smudge on the top left. I didn't even notice it. The $270 I paid was too high to begin with, I was just chasing a new listing that had clean corners and great centering.
So, it's not you. You are correct, this stuff is being scooped up and was is left at this point are the imperfects and lower grades. I am missing one card in my 68 set, #177 and I should of bought it a long time (years) ago. Now we can say the same with some of the other greats.

No algorithm needed, it's already called feedback.

On second thought they should just create an algorithm based on feedback of overgraded vintage and mark sellers accordingly

It's not EBay's job to judge whether a card is over or under graded. That would be the potential buyer's responsibility.
They just provide the forum to sell.

There's far more better things that ebay needs consulting about.Maybe the graders need more consulting.

I can't believe I am saying this but I think CrissCriss has a very valid point. If PSA has a buy back guarantee for all cards that don't meet their criteria, PSA would be very smart to buy the cards back off of eBay and correctly grade the card. I have not pondered on this long, but I do think it would be great quality control on their part.

That would still be a PSA employee/consultant to do it, not an eBay employee/consultant. Overgraded raw cards are much more of an issue that only eBay feedback can address.

I try to use my own eyes to see if it is overgraded or undergraded, and if I am not sure there are several board members I can use as a resource and vice versa to see if the grade is correct.

If a card is overpriced you can do like any other product or consumer good that is not a necessity and simply not buy it. Not sure where the issue is really. Think it is overgraded don't pay the price for the card. Think it is overpriced offer a fair price or wait for another one.
