Things to do / dealers to visit in Austin, TX

I'll be at a week-long conference in Austin this week - would love to get some pointers on sights, sounds, and numismatic points of interest!

Make it a point to go swimming one evening in Barton Springs - not up much on coin shops there but I remember one on Lamar that is half guns/half coins . . . I think McBrides is the name. Love Half Price Books, 6th street in the evenings for live music (and drinking if you are so inclined), and you have many great museums there.

Lived in Austin for a while, but now in Houston which is 3 hours away. Too bad I'm booked up this week or I'd drive up.

Stubbs BBQ restaurant downtown is a famous eatery and music venue. They tend to book really good bands. Food is pricey and tasty. I live in Atlanta (where we have great Q) and I've eaten in Memphis, so I can't say it's the best I've ever had ... but it's up there. You might want to make a reservation, though.

edited to add: The overpass/bridge nearby is known for a gigantic number of bats that emerge regularly. If you're into bats.

+1 for Stubbs. The state capitol is worth a walk through also.

There's a good coin show in Austin each January and July with some great dealers, but most don't operate brick & mortar stores. There are a number of great restaurants and hang outs in the downtown area, but it can get very crowded even on a weeknight so just don't be in a hurry. Hope you enjoy your visit! :)

McBride's at Lamar and 30th street is the gun/coin shop.
You can also see what were bank buildings of the American National Bank of Austin, in the Driscoll Hotel (which you should take a peek at anyways), and the Littlefield Building right next door, both near 6th and Congress.

Thank you all for recommendations. I'm on my way home now after a very packed week of presentations, keynote speakers (got to meet Bill Nye!), Hands-on labs and vendor lunches. Had a couple of hours to drive around and visited a few local dealers. Finally sold my 1803 MS62 8 Reales to a very nice gentleman at Village Coins and picked up a nice crescent toned 1881-s Morgan in PCGS 65 at McBrides. Nobody had any decent Mexico. There was a local Mexico and world dealer that wonderful ladies at McBrides called for me by the name of Kent Ferguson, but he didn't have time to talk after they gave him my want list for some reason. Oh well.

I also picked up an early 20th century 50 centavos from Village Coins for around $30 as a thank you for a nice and lengthy conversation with the owner.

That's probably because Ken mainly (only?) deals in gold.

That explains it. Surprised the ladies at McBrides were convinced he dealt in 8 Reales.
