My first "Caballito"

Just a cheap Caballitio, to be sure. A low-end VF and almost certainly cleaned. But not too bad looking.

Melt as of the purchase today is about 25 bucks. I paid 30. What do you think?

You gotta love that design, right?

Nice pickup...silver on the rise some day soon sell and get another one?

*Ill have to take some pics of my Bolivian coins Ive picked up for silver, cleaned or not its hard to find detailed type pieces.

Nice ones, y'all. Far nicer than mine, obviously. But I figgered mine was hard to pass up for thirty bucks. I just sold it for 40 bucks, so it's all good. I enjoyed owning one of these, if only briefly. It wasn't until I was sticking it in the mailer to go to its new home that I noticed the lettered edge on it.

I received mine in the mail today, unfortunately it looks as though it has been whizzed. If you look at my pics around the suns rays you can faintly see the scratch marks. Oh well, I will hold on to it until I get a better example for my collection. I really like peacemonkeys, it looks pl.

Ah, well. Still, for 46 bucks, I guess you didn't do THAT badly. Not a whole lot of downside there, considering the amount of bullion you've got. If silver skyrockets again, that could make up for any shortfall.

I agree- the prooflike quality of Peacemonkey's piece are to be envied, and I like the toning on coinpictures' example. Boy howdy, if you could combine the better attributes of their two coins, it would really be somethin', eh?

PS- Peacemonkey- what is the grade on yours? I spy NGC prongs in the picture.

I just ran across the following Caballito and thought it was worth sharing.

This is an absolutely gorgeous design & have a couple. Seems as per above to be victim of whizzing and dipping very frequently. The 1913 immediately above is really nice!

Congrats, I sold mine back a few years ago to a guy I worked with
from Mexico, he just had to have it, so I sold it, bout time I replace
it.........the Caballito is an Iconic coin IMO no matter the condition

Two years ago, I finally found one of these for my horses set. It's a stunning design in any grade, and I still contend that my example should be in at least an MS63 holder, if not MS64. But, that means my patience was worth it, as I got it for a very good price.

It's a very short set of coins (only 5 dates, and 7 total "varieties"), but quite difficult to find in nice MS. There are some super sexy AU58 coins out there though.

The 1914 is the "kicker" for the set, with a mintage of only 120,000 coins, and a LOT are messed with; MS examples are flat out difficult (and expensive). Goldberg sold an NGC-62 example in their Auction 91 (June 2016; Lot 3063) for $3300 with the juice. Heritage has sold an NGC-61 for $1900, AU55 for $1400, and AU-details for $1100 in the past year or so. XF sell for around $800-$1K.

That 1913/2 example that @Zoins posted above, is graded PCGS MS64, and is currently for sale on eBay for $2800 BIN (or best offer).

As a price-point disclosure, my 1911 example in NGC MS62 posted above was purchased after 3.5 years of searching for an example I liked, and for $270 BIN on ebay (from a dealer I trust). I think it was worth every cent.

While the 1914 is probably the most expensive in UNC, the 1911 short ray is actually the toughest.

I think the reason for that is, as @brg5658 alludes to above, the 1911 short ray is only considered a variety, hence fewer collectors are interested in obtaining it for their set.

Agreed, I recall mentioning this to you then...this is really a lock 64 imho.

I have a theory about this.

I believe a certain dealer in Mexican coins, active since the 1960s, dipped every coin he sold thinking (perhaps rightly at first, but surely wrongly now) that white coins sold better. This dealer handled a lot of coins!
