My delightful wife got this for me for my birthday back in May:
It is a bronze Follis of Licinius The Elder. It was minted in Heraclea between AD 308-310. The reference numbers are SR-15171 or if you like thick books RIC VI 37b.
Licinius was the chief and final rival of Constantine The Great and they fought for power over a period of many years with Constantine finally taking sole rule of the Empire. After his final defeat in AD 324 Constantine allowed Licinius to retire. In AD 326 there were charges that Licinius was plotting against Constantine, it is not clear at this point if there was any truth to these charges, they could have been fabricated by Constantine himself. In any event Licinius was executed.
