FSH: Taler and Tallero

1918-R. Tallero. Vittorio Emmanuele III. Female bust right. Reverse: Crowned eagle. Eritrea, now an independent country north of Ethiopia in Africa, was an Italian colony at the time this coin was minted. This crown was issued in 1918 to compete with the well known Maria Theresia thaler. It failed and the coin is today scarce. Recorded mintage: 510,000. NGC AU-55.

    Thanks - I read somewhere that the bust is the king's embodied in a Maria Theresia "look".

    1918 Tallero - Nice coin and a one year type as well. I really like this design. As for the obverse, look at the Italian States - Venice Tallero from 1789-1797. The portrait is, according to Krause, the "Allegorical female bust of Republic to right, wearing tiara and Doge's ermine robe..."

    The 1918 Tallero and the 1790s Tallero make a neat pair. I have both, so you could say I have a portrait of Allegorical Republic and her Allegorical Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Granddaughter, allegorically speaking of course.
