Mt. Rushmore of Hockey Cards - Survey

Hi everyone,

In the upcoming issue of SMR, Joe Orlando discusses a great question in his monthly editorial, "Taking My Hacks": What four hockey cards would make up your Mount Rushmore?

Some slots were tough to fill, but in this editorial he provides his top four choices. Now it's your chance to chime in!

Beautiful cards. Hard to argue with any of them. I think you got it right in my book, but I am a Red Wings fan (so take it with a grain of salt).
Currently working on 1970 Topps Hockey PSA 9 set
  • Hard to argue with these picks. Perhaps, the 1951 Parkhurst Howe instead of the Topps? The Topps design is far nicer, but I'd argue the Parkhurst is more historically significant and valuable.

As an aside - anyone know what it is about the C55 Vezina that made it the "king of prewar hockey"? I understand he was the top goalie of his era, but other players like Lalonde and Taylor seem to be ranked higher among the all time greats.

Definitely Howe's 1st Parkhurst over 54 Topps. And I'd add Maurice Richard's card from that set instead of the Vezina

Well, you know where my vote is. The hockey Mt. Rushmore in this article has the same 4 I posted in the thread when the football survey was up. I'm still saying as far as iconic cards go, 1954 Topps Howe easily beats 1951 Parkhurst Howe, no question.

The list is fine but the 54 Topps Howe does not belong on this list. It may look nicer than the 51 Parkhurst but the significance of the Howe RC is huge compared to the 54 Topps.
I also wouldn't mind putting the Howie Morenz RC over the Vezina RC but it's still fine with either.
  • I also would opt for the 51 Howe over 54. One looks prettier than the other, but the former is far more significant.

I do really like the idea of having a Morenz RC on there, but my understanding was the Rushmore concept was supposed to represent "iconic" cards which I suppose is why Vezina gets the nod first. After Morenz, I'd personally next go with Eddie Shore before Lalonde, Taylor, Clancy, etc. but that's just my opinion as a fan & collector.

Though I know it wouldn't make it on the Mt. Rushmore here, I also enjoy this one:

'51 over '54 Howe, Topps Test over Topps Orr and a strong PSA 9 Gretzky over that 10 image

I would vote for the '51 Howe over the '54. One could argue that the 1958 Hull could be the fourth card to complete the Mt. Rushmore of cards.
