The best card you ever pulled

After the 55 cello rip I got to wondering what the best cards we all personally pulled from packs. I don't open packs anymore, but in the 90's I did. I pulled an Arod auto from classic 4 sport back in 93 I think. My brother pulled an identical Arod auto from the same box. They were sequentially numbered. We thought that was just mega cool at the time. Also pulled an 86 Jerry rice about 20 years ago. How about you??

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

    Looking for FB HOF Rookies
  • I stopped collecting when I was 18 or so back in 1990. Watching people rip vintage packs on youtube is what really drew me back into the hobby. I bought a few 70's/early 80's basketball and football packs but have not yet opened any. As much as I would like to open them I have came to the conclusion that it is pointless unless you are going to PSA the cards you open. So now they all sit in a box collecting dust and completely ignored.

They probably are all fake anyway. haha

With that said it still remains one of my "dreams" to open a pack(any pack) of Football from the 50's or 60's or 1972 basketball. The funny thing about this is even if it were someone elses pack I would be stoked just to open it and go through it card by card.
  • A 55 Clemente. And then someone bought the card and another 55 cello pack I had. Too soon? Just kidding. Cant be so serious.

As I think about it, I was fortunate enough to rip when you ripped for your stars or team and not value. I was very happy with my Fernando Valenzuela/Sax rookie. The Dodgers.
  • Basically packs are now no different than lottery tickets. There is very little care in who is in the pack...just how much it is worth. It is a shame but understandable.

Nothing special in terms of value or shock factor, but a few years ago when I first started buying vintage packs I pulled an 81 Kevin Mchale rc and a second year Larry bird card in the same pack. I was very happy.

At a card show about a year ago, I was talking to an older dealer who said he pulled a few 52 topps mantles as a kid. Probably no big deal to some of the older guys here but I think that's pretty neat.

One of my friends sent me 4 boxes of '89 Donruss last week. He knows I got back into the hobby and it was a joke because we used to buy packs together in the 80s from the local Woolworth and he remembered us chasing the Griffey Jr RC. My twin 9 year old boys and I opened the 4 boxes and we pulled 4 Griffey Jr RCs. We had a blast doing it and it felt like 1989 again.

1972 Topps Rod Carew high number from a popped seal pack. The pack was probably around 20 years old at the time. The card now sits in an 8(OC) PSA holder. There is something special about a card that one has unwrapped himself.

That's very cool. I pulled a crazy MC Yount mini rookie...still raw along with many other stars and commons...these were from 6 BBCE packs from one of our rips.

I purchased two Wacky Packages 7th series gumless packs like the one below a few years ago at a show for $15 total.

I opened opened one and found this beauty!

I scored a PSA 10 with it and ended up trading it because I wasn't crazy about the toning. Got a nicer eye appeal PSA 9 of the same card plus around $400 extra in trade value. Best pull of my life!

Since the Wrestling All Stars are issued in a complete set in one pack I would think that doesn't count.

My best card ever pulled is easily the 1986 Panini Supersport Mike Tyson Italian. I purchased a box in 2011 from a seller in the tiny island of Cyprus and pulled two Mint Tyson's from the box. I purchased the box for $600 and graded a number of other stars in high grade from it too.

I pulled a '71 Rose from a rack pack. It ended up grading an 8. Also pulled a Catfish Hunter from the same pack. I've also pulled a '72 Clemente from a pack that graded out 8 because of a bubble on the surface. Pulled a Rose from a '74 pack that graded 8 due to centering and a '73 Mays that graded a 9. Pulled a '71 Stargell from a cello about 15 years ago. It remains raw because it's badly O/C. My buddy and I split a '60 cello pack about 20 years ago. In his section of the pack, he pulled a Kaat RC that graded 8 due to centering. He later sold it to me and it still resides in my collection.

I remember being at a card shop in the late 80's and buying pack after pack after pack going for a 1982 Donruss Ripken. After a while and I think about $25 I hit it. It's not the best card but the one I remember because I bought those packs until I hit it. Another good one was 1989 Upper Deck way back in the day. I opened a full box but and never hit a Griffey. For some reason saved the last pack. I think I had that last pack for about 15 years and one day I just had to know. Of course when I opened it there it was, Griffey.
Love those 70's - early 80's packs and boxes...send me a message if you are selling because I am buying

Back when 93-94 Finest basketball came out and Shaq cards were hot I pulled the Shaq refractor. I think at the time it was going for around $400. I took it to the National when it was in Houston in 1994 and sold it to a dealer that had a set that was missing that card.

Hey Dutch - We've been wondering where you were the past 30 years and who would have guessed you joined a collector's board? It's the little discoveries that make this life such a joy. Anyway, I spoke to Daniel at a charity croquet tourney last spring and he has forgiven you for taking out his knee. I would avoid the Kobra Kai Dojo though if I were you. Reese hasn't been doing so hot.

All from group rips on the board at one point:

1980 Rickey Henderson - bought 2 packs, let my buddy choose which pack he wanted to open...needless to say, it came back a 7.

1978 Eddie Murray - came back an 8OC

2001 Toops Traded Albert Puljols Gold - came back a 9

Mine isn't huge, but when I was 13, I pulled a 1993-94 Stadium Club Michael Jordan 1st Day Issue. I still have it. I don't know if it was worth more then, or worth more now - seems like some of these obscure MJ cards have retained value or gone up.

Pulled an 89 pro set Barry sanders out of a pack last year. Participated in a group sub here for my first ever submission and got a 10. Not a high value card but that card was always my favorite. Pulled 2 back in 89 that I still have but neither are gradable.

As a kid, 1991 Donruss Elite George Brett and then Rickey Henderson in two boxes. I bought another 40 or so at that age and never sniffed another Elite that year.

I have hit 3 MJ rookies(never a 9) at big shows over the last decade, the Andrew Luck NT RPA(at the time was about $1500 but got up to $4500). I hit a Carlos Correa Bowman Chrome Gold rookie auto and got it graded a BGS 9.5 and sold it for $800(big mistake lol). I gave wax up a few years ago. I miss it sometimes but not the hundreds of kicks in the nuts.

As a kid, my biggest hits would probably include 1970 Aaron, 1971 Munson, 1971 Seaver, 1971 Ryan.

As an unopened-ripping adult I have hit a 1970 Aaron AS from a rack, 1970 Munson RC from a cello, 1970 Mays from a cello,

1971 Blyleven RC, Jackson and Rose from a rack, 1972 Rose and Ryan from series 5/6 wax packs, 1975 Brett RC from a rack

pack and 1986 Fleer Jordan from a wax pack

Best ungradable card: '72 Staubach RC - from wax - was badly miscut image

Best as a kid: '81 Montanas - opened many a pack of that year, '82 & '83 as well. Stopped opening after that.

Best card of the last five years or so since I started back up was an 82 Topps Ripken out of a Grocery Rack Pack from BBCE that graded PSA 10.

Best card of my youth (86-93) was a 91 UD Basketball Jerry West Auto back in '91. At the time it was about a $350 card if I remember right. Not bad for a broke 15 year old.

Rookiewax, the nnof thomas is one of my favorite cards. Has an almost mythic quality to me going all the way back to childhood when I wasn't even sure what one looked like. What a thrill to pull one, or 5, from packs.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I think it was out of 1992 Collectors Edge football. I pulled a John Elway auto card that was autographed on one of the promo cards. Still have it somewhere in my bins of cards in my basement. Value you today??

seebelow...my childhood was in the 1960s. I collected from 1964 to 1968. Actually...my first baseball cards were from Post Cereal boxes in 1962 and 1963. Fortunately...Mom did not throw away my collection. I sold it back in the 1980s for $3k. I have since bought many of those star cards in high grade to reconnect to my childhood years. I wished I would have put a few unopened wax boxes away. That would be fun to rip now! Talking about setting some boxes away...an administrative assistant at work has put away factory boxes since 1971! She would buy two of each factory set...one to open and one to remain sealed. I wonder what those would be worth today...especially 1971 thru the 1970s.

I have never had great luck ripping wax, even as a kid. Not a lot of great pulls to be had anyway back then, since I got my start collecting in the prime junx wax years of 88-92. I have had a little more success recently with some modern. When I pulled this card, it probably wasn't the highest dollar card I pulled, although with recent events it may now be. Either way, I pulled this a while back with my son when he was 5 or 6 years old and Curry was then and is still his favorite player. So, we were through the roof excited to have pulled his favorite player as an auto (pretty long odds). Throw in the fact that it is die-cut (I'm a sucker for die-cuts), it is numbered to 25 and that I later subbed it for a Gem and this becomes an instant classic for me and my son.
